As of July 3, 2025, the U.S. Department of Education has officially approved the merger between Drexel University and Salus University, marking the end of the two-year process that began in April 2023. The merger between Drexel and Salus marks a new journey for Drexel’s health sciences research and opportunities, building on Salus’ century-long legacy of healthcare education in optometry, rehabilitation, audiology and physician assistant studies, among others. With the approval, all student financial aid and academic information has officially been transferred to the Drexel systems.

“This is an exciting new chapter in health sciences education that unites the strengths of our two institutions,” said Drexel President Antonio Merlo in a statement to the University on July 3. The merger brings over 1,200 students and more than 14,000 alumni into the Drexel community.  This work is a culmination of a years-long process led by the Integration Council that is composed of professional staff and faculty from both Salus and Drexel.

As a part of the merger, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (the first school in the nation of this speciality) will become Drexel’s newest college. Salus’ Osborne College of Audiology will integrate into Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions along with most of the other programs in the Salus College of Health Sciences, Education and Rehabilitation. The Salus Physician Assistant Studies Program will move into Drexel’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professional Studies in the College of Medicine.

The merger has been received positively by some members of the student community while leaving others skeptical.

“I like the Salus merger, it will be a good asset for medical students, because Salus is ‘known for its academic excellence, clinical training, and holistic approach.’ There should be more opportunities for med students,” wrote one Reddit user.

“I am skeptical that the idea of merging two parties in various degrees of strain suddenly makes for a strong union,” wrote another user.

President Merlo emphasized his commitment to supporting Salus students through the transition, welcoming them into the Drexel community committed to student success, clinical innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to all who have dedicated their time, energy, and unwavering commitment to bringing us to this pivotal moment,” said Merlo.
The merger aligns with Drexel’s 2030 strategic plan, which focuses on community engagement, interdisciplinary research and clinical innovation. With the merger finalized, Drexel hopes to reinforce its hub for healthcare training and research on a national scale.
