The Los Angeles Police Department detained two people at University Park Campus Saturday early evening after it received a report that a suspect had placed a gun in a backpack following an armed carjacking at 32nd St. and Shrine Place.
Officers followed a black car with no license plate believed to be associated with the pair to the McCarthy Way Parking Structure. As of Sunday afternoon, the LAPD is still investigating the incident, and no gun has been recovered.
The Department of Public Safety called on the LAPD for backup, a spokesperson for the LAPD said. DPS Assistant Chief David Carlisle said the LAPD took the lead on the incident.
The first suspect was detained at 4:09 p.m. Saturday in Alumni Park, and Carlisle reported that the second was detained at 4:53 p.m. DPS issued its first TrojansAlert — a campuswide emergency notification — about the incident at 5:10 p.m., notifying the University community of the closure of the McCarthy Way Parking Structure and “police activity on the University Park Campus.” The parking structure was locked down until 6:22 p.m. as the LAPD searched for evidence.
The second TrojansAlert also said police activity on UPC had concluded, but an LAPD spokesperson had said its officers were still at the scene looking for further articles of evidence at the time.
