Each month, HANC High School faculty selects four students, one from each grade, to be the recipients of the Kavod Award. These students exemplify the character trait of respect.
During the most recent award ceremony, before the entire school, recipients received the “renowned” Kavod T-shirt and heard the comments made anonymously by their nominating teachers. Subsequently, awardees were interviewed and asked about respect and what respect means to them. These comments, as well as the teachers’ comments, are shared below, highlighting why each student was nominated.
Lilah Dublin, 9th Grade
Lilah’s nominating teacher shared the following: “Teaching Lilah Dublin is truly a pleasure, always polite, always attentive, interested, and involved. Lilah gives honor to our class!”
Lilah said, “I always try to understand where teachers are coming from. They are trying to teach us, and help us do well. ”
After graduating from HANC, Lilah seeks to become a lawyer.
Aaron Afrahim,10th Grade
Aaron’s teacher stated that “Aaron Afrahim is a wonderful young man. Aaron is a super student who is always attentive and participating in class. He is a mensch and very personable with both the Rabbeim and his friends. He is always smiling and in a good mood. He is a class leader and he leads by example.”
Aaron commented upon his constant smile, stating, “It’s the right thing to do, to have a positive, optimistic mind-set. One smile can make someone else’s day. My parents taught me to always be happy!”
Aaron wants to be a medical doctor, perhaps becoming an ophthalmologist once he graduates from HANC.
Sharona Kataev, 11th Grade
Sharona’s teacher said that “Sharona is inquisitive and has many questions in class, but she always asks her question with the utmost respect. Her tone and general way of speaking and interacting with her teachers is always with kavod for the person she’s speaking to.”
Sharona shared her views on respect, stating, “I am very sensitive to other people. I am a sensitive person. I try to watch what I say, because words have a big impact. Until I got this award, I didn’t realize that people really noticed at all. You shouldn’t expect recognition, but the fact that I did get it- is nice.”
After graduation, Sharona plans on going to medical school, specializing in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.
Jordan Ehrenhaus, 12th Grade
Jordan’s teacher stated that “Jordan’s fine character makes him stand out amongst his peers. Jordan is a fine and respectful young man. His kindness and humility makes him a pleasure to teach and a great friend.”
Jordan said to “Treat others how you want to be treated. You’re not the center of attention. Try to empathize with other people.”
Jordan plans on becoming a medical doctor and starting medical school after this final year at HANC.
