Florida State’s already stellar 2012 recruiting class received a big boost on Wednesday afternoon when Jameis Winston, the No. 1 quarterback in the class according to ESPN, announced his plans to join the Seminoles next season.
After narrowing down his list of top schools to FSU, Alabama and Louisiana State, Winston announced his intentions live on ESPNU at his high school in Hueytown, Ala.
“Well you know it’s been tough, tough the whole time,” Winston said. “I feel confident in my decision. I think I want to be a Florida State Seminole.”
Ranked the No. 11 overall prospect in the ESPNU 150, Winston went against the grain in choosing the ‘Noles over the home state Crimson Tide. Ultimately, his decision came down to how comfortable he felt in Tallahassee.
“I am just comfortable and that’s where I wanted to be,” Winston added. “God has blessed me the whole way. I see myself there in the near future.”
Winston’s commitment is huge for Florida State not only because of his immense talent and potential, but also because Jimbo Fisher and his staff went into Alabama and stole one of the nation’s premier recruits away from Nick Saban and the Tide–something that doesn’t happen often.
However, Jimbo and company can’t take all the credit for landing their latest blue chip recruit. Winston, who is also considered one of the top baseball prospects in the country, was also recruited by Mike Martin and the FSU baseball team.
Winston joined eight other recruits–including the nation’s No. 1 overall prospect, defensive end Mario Edwards–with his pledge to be a Seminole.
