Pay the athletes

That is whether or not college athletes should get paid while being in school.

I bring this topic up today because college basketball coach of Louisville Rick Pitino is under siege right now for a potential violation when it comes to recruiting players.

To make a long story short, there are reports and speculations that he helped recruiters have some “fun” with strippers as an incentive to go and play for him at Louisville.

It has not been determined yet whether or not that the athletes were given money in order for this to happen.

But what I have to say to that is, so what?

I have always been for schools to pay their students athletes.

And I speak on this for all levels in the collegiate field.

Now as much as I would love to be a student athlete, I am not and I do not fully know all of the benefits that they get.

But, I do know that these players are not all on full scholarship when it comes to playing.

Some do not even get a scholarship to play for the team.

With that being said, with the ridiculous class schedule they face as well as practice and meeting times there is no time for them to work and earn money for their personal life.

So the fact that they can get in serious trouble by accepting money from outside sources other than family is beyond me and truly blows my mind.

These student athletes are put on such high pedestals that people forget they are also human beings.

Yes, I get that they are there to focus on sports and school, but they do get leisure time and in my opinion handing them a stipend every semester would not hurt.

Now what they do with that money may cause problems; but if that does happen, they are also adults when they come into college so of course they will be held accountable. But the main fact of the matter is that some of these families can not support their child fully so why would it hurt to get some extra money from the school?

I mean they are a lead figure and if this is what they are going to be doing in the pros, just pay them.
