Backup Oregon quarterback Jake Rodrigues is leaving the football team and is looking to transfer schools, the redshirt sophomore told CSNNW.com Monday. He made his decision after meeting with head coach Mark Helfrich.

The athletic department has yet to confirm Rodrigues’ departure, although ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and The Oregonian’s Andrew Greif confirmed the report.

Rodrigues had been in a fight to claim Oregon’s backup quarterback position as he was playing behind 2014 Heisman canidate Marcus Mariota. Rodrigues was competing against fellow sophomore Jeff Lockie but neither player became the clear number two on the depth chart.

Rodrigues’ decision comes after the spring game in which neither Rodrigues or Lockie were able to stand out from the other. Rodrigues threw 7-for-18 for 66 yards and one interception while Lockie completed 7-of-12 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. Rodrigues also ended the game with 42 rushing yards.

With Rodrigues leaving the search for a backup quarterback will continue. On the depth chart behind Mariota are Lockie: walk-on redshirt freshman Taylor Allie, who also competed in the spring game, redshirt freshman Damian Hobbs and incoming four-star recruit Morgan Mahalak.

Rodrigues has yet to decide where he will transfer.
