It’s not often the opportunity comes to get a great laugh and contribute to a worthy cause in one Tuesday, but the UO Stand Up Society is offering this opportunity on April 8th.
From 8:00-10:00pm in the Great Room of Global Scholars Hall, the student-run comedy club will be performing a show to benefit Alzheimer’s disease research efforts.
The event is one of many taking place across the country in a movement started by comedian and actor Seth Rogen, who is a passionate advocate for action against Alzheimer’s.
A few years back he was one of the founders of Hilarity for Charity, which calls upon his own area of expertise, comedy, to aid the fight to cure the debilitating brain disease.
This year the concept of HFC U was brought to life, which is a program to encourage university campuses across the nation to host their own Hilarity for Charity events to raise both awareness and funds for the Alzheimer’s Association.
The college or university that raises the most money also wins a special advanced screening of the upcoming movie “Neighbors”, in addition to a meet-and-greet with Seth Rogen himself for the fundraising group.
Various types of events can be held, but the Stand Up Society decided to stick to what they do best: one performer, with one mike, bringing a crowd to tears of laughter.
“We wanted to do a charity show and when we found this, it was the perfect thing,” said Joe Glasgow, cofounder and active member of the Stand Up Society. “There will be six comics, and then Absolute Improv, the improv group on campus, will do a bit in the middle of the performance.”
If you are involved in Greek Life, take note: the house that is credited with donating the most money gets to partner with UO Stand Up Society to produce a comedy show for that houses charity of choice. The house with the highest attendance at Tuesday’s show will automatically get $100 donated to its philanthropy.
Whether you want to support the Alzheimer’s Association or just to have some fun, Hilarity for Charity is definitely an event worth looking into. A $10 donation at their website, http://www.crowdrise.com/joeglasgow-hfcu will get you an automatic ticket (include your name in the donation). Come out and support some Ducks who embrace a great strategy: doing a good thing, and having a good time while doing it.
