The Portland Timbers (0-0-2) hosted the Chicago Fire (0-1-1) at Providence Park in Portland, Ore., at noon on Saturday, March 16, 2014. Last week, Timbers’ new forward Gastón Fernández scored on a header off a corner kick that tied Portland 1-1 with the Philadelphia Union. The Chicago Fire were able to score a goal in the 19th minute via a penalty kick by Jeff Larentowicz that put the Fire up 1-0 over the Timbers. The Timbers opened in the second half with many chances to score the equalizer but none went in. On a counter in the 56th minute, Timbers’ forward Diego Valeri rolled a cross into the area giving Timbers’ forwards Gastón Fernández and Maximiliano Urruti a chance to score, neither of which could. It wasn’t until the 79th minute when the Timbers’ forward Gastón Fernández scored a point to tie up the match 1-1.
The Portland Timbers will face the Colorado Rapids at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at 3 p.m.
