She didn’t seem to be streaking to a competitive finish, but a steady pace and good endurance helped Phyllis Francis finish third in the women’s 400-meter final on Friday afternoon.
While most of the back seemed to be pushing and fading as the race went on, Francis kept a constant clip that allowed her to slide into the final turn and gain ground as she closed the race. Her finish time was 50:86 and earned the Ducks six points in the team standings.
“I did what I came out here to do, to score for my team,” Francis said. “I made sure to keep my composure.”
