She looked to have it locked up near the end of the 5,000 meters on Friday but could not pull it out, falling to third in the final lap.

Hasay quickly asserted herself among the leaders of the pack in the race. With two laps to go in the lengthy race, she was in second place and closing in on first. Right as the front-runners made the turn into the final lap, Hasay surged into first place. She had made her move too early. After passing Abbey D’Agostino and taking a slight lead, Hasay slowed as D’Agostino exploded on the back stretch, passing Hasay to take a huge lead. As Hasay began to falter, Betsy Saina picked up the pace and sped up to pass Hasay in the final 20 meters to steal second place. Hasay finished with the bronze.

“This past week has been one of the best weeks of my life, just thinking about all the memories I have had here,” Hasay said. “These past four years have been an experience that were like no other.”
