Penn State is expected to name New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien its next head coach on Saturday, a number of outlets including ESPN have reported.
O’Brien served as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator this season and has been on staff since 2007 as an offensive assistant, quarterbacks coach and wide receivers coach.
He attended Brown, the same school as former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, and was an assistant there before serving as an assistant for Georgia Tech, Maryland and Duke.
The 42-year-old has helped guide New England to the third-most points per game in the NFL and the second most yards per game this season.
O’Brien interviewed with Penn State for the head coaching job on Thursday. He is reportedly going to coach the remainder of the season for the Patriots. Team spokesman Jeff Nelson was unable to be reached for comment.
Tom Bradley has acted as interim head coach for Penn State since Paterno’s firing on Nov. 9.
