How To Celebrate Pride Month in Utah

The relevance of Pride Month has only grown in recent years. It’s a time when a whole community of people can express themselves without judgment, providing a sense of togetherness and acceptance. Pride is still going strong, especially in Salt Lake City. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the Pride events happening this month.

There is a staggering number of activities available this month, so note that this is not all of them. They range from fun times to educational and historical events. Either way, everything that is below is worth checking out.

Firstly, there will be a showing of “A Long Way From Heaven” at the Salt Lake City Public Library on June 14th. “A Long Way From Heaven” is a documentary that shows the underground queer community of Brigham Young University (BYU) and their struggles to find acceptance in that environment. After the film, a panel will be open to questions, featuring members who are former students and professors at BYU, as well as other specialists.

Along with the theme of exploring LGBTQ+ art and artists, on June 20, there will be a showing of LGBTQ+ works at the Urban Arts Gallery. It will be free to attend and goes from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

For the last, more casual event on June 13, there will be the “Blooming With Pride” event held at Red Butte Garden. “Blooming With Pride” is a display of vibrant plant arrangements that symbolize both variety in life and love. The event is free to attend, but requires online registration for a time slot. Spaces might go fast, so get them while you can!

While looking at art is good and all, it’s perfectly reasonable that some people want to spend their Pride month engaging with activities. The “SLC Pride Festival” will be hosted from June 28-29. While there is not much information about the event at the moment, it is sure to be a good time.

For those who want a breakfast and a show, look no further than “Himbos and Hashbrowns: A Drag King Brunch.” Set for June 22 at the HK Brewing Collective, “Himbos And Hashbrowns” is a drag show with a nice breakfast twist. It is 21-plus and all proceeds go to help fund the previously mentioned “SLC Pride Festival.”

And to round things up is another festival, “West Valley Pride.” With the first Pride festival ever held in West Valley. It will be held in the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. There will be workshops, art activities, an art gallery and a vendor’s market consisting of local art and food. The “West Valley Pride” festival will be on June 28 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Even with all of these events listed, there are many more. So if you can’t make it to one listed here, there are others to attend. For additional information about the events listed here, check out their websites and social handles. Make sure to go out there and show your pride.
