The University of Utah’s undergraduate literary magazine, “The Canticle,” is back with a new name, “Seven Canyons Review.” “The Canticle,” originally founded in 2015 by the English Student Advisory Committee, was a magazine for University of Utah undergraduate students to feature their poetry, prose, visual art and even music. During the pandemic, the magazine paused and hasn’t had paper editions since.
Kit Stevens and Daiyan Ke, editors-in-chief of the magazine, were the two student voices who brought its resurrection to the forefront of professors’ and faculty’s minds. Stevens says the two met with professors, advisers and career coaches to bring this student project back up and running. “In that first meeting we had, us and about 20 different staff members from the English department just hashing out details,” Stevens said.
Stevens said the rename was due to practicality purposes as new leadership takes over, but also “to rechristen it for a new chapter.” The change from “The Canticle” to “Seven Canyons Review” is a homage to the seven canyons that run through the Salt Lake Valley. “We liked the idea of bringing in voices from different backgrounds, different places from around the valley and pooling them into one source like the creeks that flow through those seven canyons and pool into the Great Salt Lake,” Stevens said.
The revived magazine will continue to accept and feature submissions from students in its annual edition. This year’s edition will be about 100 to 150 pages and will come out April 2026. Submissions will be accepted in the fall and early spring of this upcoming school year. “We’re looking for things that are fresh, authentic, show good artistic skill and dedication to the craft. We’re not just looking for writing, we have expanded it to include visual arts as well,” Stevens said. If you’re interested in submitting, look out for flyers around campus when it comes time for submissions.
The “Seven Canyons Review” not only needs submissions but also applications for their open positions such as editors, readers, graphic designers, social media supervisors and advertisers. If you are a student at the University of Utah and want to gain experience in publishing and contributing to the vision of this journal, applications are open now.
“The Seven Canyons Review” allows students from any major to publish their creative work, and all are encouraged to submit. The journal’s leadership and the English department are excited for what’s to come. “We’re happy to be back,” Stevens said.
