Paris Saint-Germain Wins First Champions League Title

On a night destined for the history books, Paris Saint-Germain finally lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy for the first time, delivering a resounding 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in Munich on Saturday, May 31.

For a club that has spent decades chasing Europe’s most coveted prize, this was more than just a win — it was a statement. Under manager Luis Enrique, PSG produced a performance brimming with style, speed and dominance, outclassing Inter Milan from start to finish.

The scoring began early, as PSG showed their intent right from kickoff. In the 12th minute, teenager Désiré Doué showcased vision and maturity beyond his years, setting up former Inter defender Achraf Hakimi for the opening goal. The Moroccan international’s finish against his former club was clinical and poetic.

Just eight minutes later, PSG doubled their lead. A failed clearance by Nicoló Barella was pounced on by Willian Pacho, triggering a swift counterattack. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fed Ousmane Dembélé, who passed it onto Doué. The winger’s shot deflected off Federico Dimarco, wrong footing goalkeeper Yann Sommer and sending PSG fans into raptures.

Inter showed more fight after halftime, but their hopes were crushed in the 63rd minute. A dazzling one-two between Vitinha and Dembélé opened space for Doué, whose cool finish secured his brace and earned him Man of the Match honors.

From there, PSG ran riot. In the 73rd minute, Kvaratskhelia added a fourth, latching onto a through ball from Dembélé and finishing powerfully at the near post. But the final moment of magic came in the 86th minute when 19-year-old Senny Mayulu struck from the edge of the box after linking up with Bradley Barcola, sealing an emphatic and record-breaking win.

No team had ever won a Champions League final by more than four goals — until now.

For Luis Enrique, the victory was personal. After losing his daughter Xana to cancer in 2019, the triumph served as an emotional milestone. PSG supporters honored his journey with a tifo of Enrique and his daughter, ensuring she was part of the club’s biggest night.

Back home in Paris, the City of Light lived up to its name as over 50,000 fans gathered at the Parc des Princes, with tens of thousands more flooding the Champs-Élysées and the Eiffel Tower. The celebrations, however, took a tragic turn. French authorities reported two fatalities during the nationwide celebrations, including a stabbing in Dax and a scooter accident in Paris. A police officer was critically injured by fireworks in Coutances.

Despite the isolated violence, the atmosphere in many parts of the city remained jubilant. Fans climbed monuments, let off flares and chanted deep into the night. Up to 110,000 people are expected to attend a victory parade on Sunday along the Champs-Élysées, followed by a trophy presentation and concert at Parc des Princes.

After years of heartbreak and near-misses, Paris Saint-Germain finally reigns supreme in Europe. This was not just a victory — it was a coronation.
