On Thursday, I set out with my camera and wandered around campus, the word “shadow” — this week’s theme — echoing in my mind. I knew, at the very least, that I was hoping to study people and the way their shadows interact, the way light warps around their silhouettes.
The beauty of photography is that you never really know what you’re going to get. And so it was that when I finally went home and looked back at the photos, I saw that, even without a face, the people in these photographs tell a story: a man holding up a sign in protest, a girl biking to class, two friends parting ways. Seen upside down, especially — a last-minute edit we made before publishing this installment — it’s as if we’re looking into an alternate universe of nameless, wordless figures going about their day, moving, learning, living.
