Modest Mouse sure knows how to keep the ball rolling.

The 21-year-old band played for an almost sold out crowd Friday night at Bayou Music Center to fans who sung like they knew the lyrics better than frontman Isaac Brock himself. The band kept their energy up the entire time, bantering back and forth with the crowd and even stopping in the middle of a song to address a story they had mentioned before.

The band is still riding off the high of their 2007 album “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank,” which included hits “Dashboard” and “Fire It Up.” Houston was their last stop before they played Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, which was surprising to this reporter, who thought the show would’ve faltered from the big expectations that Austin brings.

Modest Mouse is full of surprises that you wouldn’t expect, playing oldies but goodies throughout their 19-song set, including “Gravity Rides Everything,” “A Different City” and “Paper Thin Walls,” which brought the crowd to the days of rocking out to them in middle school.

Overall, Modest Mouse knew what they were doing. They played good music, played it well, interacted with the crowd and maybe, just maybe, made the crowd realize that good music could make one’s troubles seem to fade away.
