Oregon track and field head coach Robert Johnson was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men’s Head Coach of the Year on Wednesday afternoon.
Oregon assistant coach Andy Powell also received the award. He was named the Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
This latest award adds to Johnson’s solid year at the helm for the Ducks, as he just recently accepted an award from the Pac-12 conference. In his second year as the head coach for Oregon, Johnson led the men’s team to their first team title since 1984. The men’s winning score is also the most since the current eight-deep scoring system was implemented in 1985.
Powell, who leads the distance crew, helped the Ducks achieve their title as they had a significant role in scoring points at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Powell coached freshman Edward Cheserek to a victory in the 10,000 and a second place finish in the 5000. He also helped senior Mac Fleet defend his 2013 1500 title. His runners finished second, third and fourth in the 5000; first, fifth, and eighth in the 10,000; first in the 1500 and sixth in the men’s steeplechase.
This is the first time that an Oregon coach has won either award during the outdoor season.
