Students of the Indian Subcontinent celebrate spring with Utsav Festival

However, if you are feeling inclined to celebrate in a somewhat louder and more colorful fashion, the UO Students of the Indian Subcontinent will be hosting their annual festival of Utsav on Apr. 20.

The Students of the Indian Subcontinent, or SIS, is an association of students with backgrounds from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan. Its purpose is to promote awareness of culture from all areas of the subcontinent.

The club has monthly meetings and organizes small social events like Bollywood movie nights. In addition, the students put on three major cultural events throughout the year: Diwali, a festival of lights held in the fall; Holi, festival of colors held later in the spring; and Utsav, which is a showcase of talent.

“There will be dancing, there will be singing—but mostly dancing,” said SIS treasurer Juhi Shah. “In India itself, there are so many different forms of dancing and a lot of groups come and perform together.”

Performers went through a rigorous audition process before spring break to be selected, so the shows are sure to be on point.

The event will take place in the EMU. There will be gorgeous decorations, authentic food and plenty of entertainment. A dinner catered from Taste of India will be served in the Fishbowl at 5 p.m. Following dinner, the event will move upstairs to the ballroom for the performance portion. Tickets are 6 dollars and can be picked up in advance at the UO Ticket Office or purchased at the door.
