On Friday, Apr. 4, UNC Charlotte will host the campus’s largest career fair yet. This event will take place in the Student Activity Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be open to all current students as well as graduates.
The Career Fair gives students and graduates the opportunity to look for jobs, internships and information about graduate schools.
At least 180 employers have already registered for the event. Employers will range from non-profit companies to corporate employers.
All majors are encouraged to attend, and students can be sure to find an opportunity that will meet their interests.
According to Brooke Brown, the senior assistant director for publicity and outreach for the career center, 60 or more of these companies are interested in students in any major.
Because some information is provided online, Brown strongly urges students to look into the potential employers so they have something to discuss. “Do research on the companies, so you know who you want to talk to and a little bit about them so you when you walk up to them, you’ll have some things to talk about,” said Brown.
Internship opportunities will be available for students who are still in school and full-time job opportunities for students planning on graduating in May.
The dress code for this event is business professional. If students don’t have access to a suit, they should at least wear slacks or skirts and dress shirts. Students are also asked to bring 12 to 20 copies of their resumes to hand out to employers.
Cover letters and references are not necessary.
Brown advises that students prepare an “elevator speech” to present to employers. An elevator speech is usually around 30 seconds and gives a student the chance to start a conversation with an employer without looking clueless.
“The Career Fair gives students the chance to do some face-to-face networking with employers so when they do apply, employers have met them, they have put a face to a name and that’s a lot better than just sending in your application,” said Brown.
