Fitness column: kickin’ asphalt, snowy conditions

The snow was detrimental to my running this past week.

I am not used to running in such conditions and the two solid inches of ice on the sidewalks were pretty much a no go for my clumsy self.

I took this time to become buddies with the gym all over again.

However, the treadmill is not my friend. The one time I tried to run on the treadmill, I discovered that I don’t run straight and I almost fell off the treadmill in front of everyone in the gym.

Instead, I befriended the elliptical and got some cross training in.

The elliptical is one of the best cross training activities for runners. It uses the same movements and muscles as running but without the impact.

Last semester when I had my lower leg problems, a lot of people suggested that I do the elliptical, but I was stubborn so I never did.

However, after spending some time on it the past week, I see the benefits of it and will definitely be utilizing it more.

I also used my time in the gym to do some weight lifting. I cannot lift much weight, but just being there working at it little by little made me feel strong.

The machines may look intimidating, but they are not difficult to use at all. Most of them have pictures on them instructing you what to do, but if not, there are people working in the gym who would be happy to help you. Or find a friend who has lifted before who can show you the ropes so that you do not injure yourself.

Lifting weights can help your running because your body will overall be stronger.

Hopefully with the upcoming warmer weather, I will get some long runs in. I got really excited and motivated after my run last weekend, but the weather kind of dampened my plans.

I am planning on attempting a five miler this week. There are only 49 days left until my 10k which is six miles, and I want to have run the distance at least twice prior to the race.

However, I need to work my way up there somewhat slowly so I do not injure myself or get discouraged like I did before the 5k.

I have started thinking about my goals for the race, and I decided that I want to take it slow and steady and simply make it through the mileage. I think I can do it, but it is still two miles longer than I have ever run before so the nerves are certainly building.
