The University of Maine men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University over the weekend, with the women’s team competing on Friday and the men’s on Saturday. There were impressive results from each side as they set many individual best marks at the invitational despite coming up short in the team competition.
UMaine’s Rachel Wilkinson competed in the mile run and finished with a time of 5:07.61, topping her previous best time of 5:15.52. Wilkinson’s teammate Jaclyn Masters set a new personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.51.32.
The personal bests continued for the Black Bears during the weight throw as Emily Boardman recorded a final toss of 51’-01.75. Boardman finished in the top 10 at the invitational. Robyn McFetters recorded a toss of 49’-11.25 during the weight throw to place 13th in the event.
The women performed well during the shot put as well. Alexis Wessels and Ashley Donohoe both competed in the shot put. Wessels finished 35th with a throw of 33’-01.75, while Donohoe grabbed 16th with a throw of 39’-01.00.
Grace MacLean of Bangor competed in the pole vault as well as the high jump. In the pole vault, MacLean finished with a final mark of 10’-06.00. In the high jump, she finished with a final mark of 5’-03.00.
Ashten Hackett competed in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.04 seconds that barely beat out her previous time from an event at the College of the Holy Cross last week. Katelyn Guilmette took 47th place during the 60-meter with a time of 8.14 seconds.
Shannon O’Neil ran for a time of 1:21.70 during the 500-meter dash. Teammate Kelsey Maxim was right behind, finishing with a time of 1:21.99 in the event.
On the men’s side, Jake Leithiser finished the 500-meter with a personal best time of 1:06.42. Daniel Roukey also set a season best during the 200-meter with a time of 22.42 seconds.
Kelton Cullenberg competed in the 5000-meter run, finishing with a time of 14.28.13. He finished 14th overall in the event. Liam Nee competed in the 800-meter, finishing with a time of 1:52.12 for yet another seasonal best.
During the 60-meter hurdles, James Reed placed third overall with a time of 7.99 seconds. Joseph Viola set a season best in the 400-meter, clocking in at 49.58 seconds.
During the weight throw, Wilson Adams snagged a fourth place finish with a final mark of 18.32 meters. His teammate Justin Gagne recorded a throw of 16.80 meters, which earned him a ninth place finish.
Continuing the personal bests during the field events was Julian Hubbard, who finished in 24th place during the long jump with a final mark of 6.48 meters. He placed eighth during the triple jump with a final mark of 13.87 meters.
The pole vault was represented by Black Bear Tristan Wortman, who also set a new season best with a height of 15’-03.00, earning him a ninth place finish. During the shot put, Justin Gagne placed second with a final throw of 17.36 meters.
The men’s and women’s teams will host their rivals the University of New Hampshire at a home meet Feb. 15. The meet will take place in the New Balance Field House at 12 p.m.
