UMaine Swimming and Diving Compete at Dartmouth

The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend. The men’s team finished fifth overall with a score of 122, while the women’s team finished sixth with a score of 249.

On the men’s side, senior Caleb Hoffman, freshman John Carlucci, sophomore Shane Kinnon and sophomore Matt England took ninth place during the men’s 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:40.13.

Carlucci finished eighth in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:17.82. He also finished eighth in the 200-meter fly with a time of 2:00.41.

Junior David Vittori placed 22nd in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.70 seconds. England finished 12th during the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 54.90 seconds, and Hoffman finished 10th in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:16.24.

On the women’s side, sophomore Taylor Sharp placed 14th during the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:02.94, freshman Kailey Dowd finished in eighth place during the 1650-meter freestyle with a time of 18:03.01, and senior Shannon Bender placed finished 11th in the 400-meter with a time of 4:45.88. Bender would also place seventh in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:11.87.

The women’s 200-meter medley relay — comprised of junior Naja Harvey, senior Erica Smrcina, freshman Katerina Mosquera-Cardi and senior Lauren Dwyer — placed fourth with a time of 1:51.54.

Senior Kara Capossela snagged ninth place during the 1-meter dive and seventh in the 3-meter dive.

Harvey finished in third place during the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:06.73 while junior Abby Linn and Smrcina finished 18th and 19th, respectively.

Smrcina finished in eighth place in the 100-meter fly with a time of 59.20 seconds, while Dwyer followed up in 16th place with a time of 1:00.23.

The women’s team will host the University of New Hampshire in a conference meet Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. The men’s side doesn’t get back into action until Feb. 28 for the ECAC championships.
