Who: No. 13 Oregon Ducks vs. BYU Cougars
Coverage: Pac-12 Network
Overview: After facing a high-powered Ole Miss offense that forced them into an overtime battle a couple weeks back, the No. 13 Ducks will be in a similar scenario against BYU this Saturday. Both the Ducks (3rd) and Cougars (5th) currently rank among the top five in scoring and will likely showcase an exciting up-tempo matchup all throughout the game. As both teams inch closer to conference play, this game will be one of the few remaining games to refine any kinks before getting into the meat of the season.
Oregon (10-0, 0-0 Pac-12)
With six new transfers suiting up this season, the Ducks couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season. In addition to ranking in the top five in both scoring (3rd) and field goal percentage (4th), the Ducks boast a perfect 10-0 record with three notable wins against Ole Miss, Georgetown and Illinois. Aside from rebounding, where they rank 176th in the country, the Ducks have continued to gel as a unit and are solidifying the notion that they are legitimate contenders in a loaded Pac-12 conference.
In regards to playing the Cougars, the Ducks will need to keep an eye on two main players: Tyler Haws (22.3 PPG) and Matt Carlino (16.2 PPG). Both are averaging leading their team in scoring and are the center pieces for an offense that knows how to score the ball. As a team, the Cougars are shooting 46.6 percent from the floor.
Players to watch:
Joseph Young: 19.3 (PPG), 3.6 (RPG), 55.5 (FG%), 47.7 (3P%)
Mike Moser: 14.9 (PPG), 7.4 (RPG), 52.3 (FG%), 40.9 (3P%)
BYU (8-4, 0-0)
The Cougars haven’t gotten off to the start they wanted to with four early losses, but they did pick up a 112-103 win against Stanford. They are coming off an 81-64 loss to Utah.
For BYU, the most interesting stat so far has been the amount of field goals they have attempted so far in comparison to other teams. BYU has taken a total of 812 field goals to Oregon’s 561. While the Cougars may not necessarily be a tournament team down the stretch, their offense is something the Ducks will have to keep leveled throughout the game.
In regards to facing the Ducks, the Cougars will need to figure out a way to establish the paint and utilize their tempo early on. The Cougars do rank in the top 10 in rebounding (9th), so they should have the advantage down low in that regard. This will be a good opportunity for the Ducks to improve in that department as well.
Players to watch:
Tyler Haws: 22.3 (PPG), 5.2 (RPG), 45.4 (FG%), 42.4 (3P%)
Matt Carlino: 16.2 (PPG), 5.0 (RPG), 38.7 (FG%), 28.1 (3P%)
