Men’s tennis finishes fall season with success at Nordstrom Open

For the Oregon men’s tennis team, finishing strong on the last day of fall season competition was essential to leaving a positive mark on the team record and carrying momentum into the dual season in January.

They did just that on the final day of the Nordstrom Open in Seattle, Wash.

Sophomore Daan Maasland’s singles run came to a close after he was defeated by the top-seeded player in the tournament. Maasland met Scoville Jenkins, a former ATP professional once ranked as high as No. 187 in singles in the semifinals. He came up short, 6-2, 6-4, but accomplished his goal of a semifinal appearance. Jenkins has previously squared off against Roger Federer in the 2007 U.S. Open and also qualified for the 2009 French Open.

Maasland impressed head coach Nils Schyllander after an impressive freshman campaign.

“It was great to have Maasland back,” Schyllander told GoDucks.com. “He started where he left off last season as a freshman. I think he gained a lot of confidence at this event.”

In addition to Maasland’s performance, the Ducks were presented by freshman Jayson Amos in the singles bracket. Amos won three matches to reach the round of 16, while his junior teammate Daniel Sardu also reached the round of 16 with two wins. Sophomore Brent Chin also tallied a win to reach the third round.

On the doubles side of the tournament, the Ducks’ team of Sardu and Chin defeated fourth-seeded Jenkins and Jesse Walter 8-7 on Sunday to reach the semifinals. Third-seeded Maasland and Amos defeated their opponents to reach the semifinals as well.

“Overall, this was a very positive end to the fall season,” Nils Schyllander told GoDucks.com. “We got a ton of experience, won a lot of matches and played at a very high level. I’m very pleased with the way we competed this weekend.”

In the four events this fall, Oregon posted a combined 58-29 record in all matches while winning two main draw flight titles. In singles play, the Ducks were paced by senior Robin Cambier’s nine wins, followed by sophomore Kevin Farin (7), Amos (7) and Sardu (5). Cambier and Farin led the Ducks in doubles play with a 8-1 record.

The Ducks will open the dual season on Jan. 17, 2014 as Oregon plays host to Portland State at the UO Student Tennis Center. Last year, the Ducks finished with a 16-8 dual record and a program-best ITA ranking of No. 33.
