When it comes to game day fashion, how fashionable are you?
The Oregon football team is notorious for its decadent uniforms. The Ducks have over 512 combinations. Oregon football players sport elaborate accessories like liquid metal helmets. Nike has outfitted the Ducks since 1996 and hasn’t entirely repeated a uniform since 2004. Naturally, fans have to outdo themselves in game day attire in efforts to keep up with the fashion-forward team.
In order to keep fans in line with the chic team, the Oregon athletic department created a color schedule to keep fans from clashing. Fans can show their Duck pride by wearing black, yellow, green and white to designated games. Matching colored shirts may be enough for just your average fan but when it comes to dressing like a hardcore Duck fan, color coordinated shirts just aren’t sufficient.
According to Duck Store employee Denise Lutz, “It’s easy to differentiate an average fan from a hardcore fan by the way they dress themselves in game day apparel. A hardcore fan is decked out in Duck clothing from a wig and face paint, all the way down to yellow and green socks.”
During the Oregon vs. Tennessee game, Duck fans wore yellow, but Sara Hardie wanted to stand out in the sea of yellow. Hardie sported a yellow and green wig, yellow shorts and tights with a yellow and green cape, facial stickers and green and yellow wrist guards.
But what happens when fans are supposed to wear a different color? Hardie has that covered. She has game day outfits in green and black so she can stay in accordance with the color schedule. The dedicated fan began putting together her game day ensembles about eight years ago and has worn her outfits to every game since. “I try to add a new piece to my outfit every game,” Hardie said.
Similar to Hardie, Mimi Duck considers herself to be up with game day fashion. Planning around the scheduled yellow, Mimi Duck wore a homemade full-length yellow dress with gold sequins and a green petticoat underneath. She topped off her ensemble with a large hat containing a feather boa and a green and yellow bow.
You never know just what you might see in Autzen Stadium. Fans are seen with green colored contacts, green and yellow facial hair and more.
But not everyone dresses exuberantly. There are many fans who embrace more subtle trends around the stadium. Common trends include: Homemade T-shirt dresses, Spirit Ts, green and yellow pants and shorts and of course all the accessories: beads, facial stickers and sunglasses.
According to Lutz, This season’s most popular game day apparel bought at the Duck Store are the Spirit Ts. “The Spirit Ts come at a reasonable price and vary in color to stay in accordance with the rotating color schedule.” The Duck Store, Hirons and Goodwill were the most common answers as to where fans went to shop for game day outfits.
Hirons has just about everything you could think of for a game day outfit. The store has four aisles dedicated to Duck gear and signs to make sure you buy the appropriate color for the game.
Goodwill has unique finds at a great price. Fan Kyle Everitt recently bought a pair of white pants from Goodwill and then tie-dyed them in green and yellow.
Game day allows fans to get creative with fashion and embrace the chance to go all out in duck colors, but not everyone likes Oregon’s wild style, “You guys look like slobs,” said Tennessee fan Bob Frizell. Frizell was wearing an orange polo with khaki shorts and loafers, embracing game day fashion in a more traditional way than the dedicated Oregon fans.
