TCU’s Charles Silmon took home the national title in the men’s 100 meter dash with a time of 9.89 today at Hayward Field.
“I have been working hard all year for this,” Silmon said. “I am pretty sure everyone had me as an underdog headed in and I just kept my composure.”
The race was close throughout the entire duration, but Silmon was able to push through the last 20 meters to take home the win.
Silmon said that he believes he has a slight strain in his hamstring, but we so focused on the race he didn’t notice till after.
Finishing behind Silmon in second was Dentarius Locke of Florida State, who ran in 9.91.
Mississippi’s Isiah Young finished in third was a time of 9.96.
After his seventh place finish last year, Silmon felt he had something to prove and had the NCAA Championships on his mind the entire throughout the season.
“Last year I came up short,” he said. “I just kept the mind frame of being hungry and never giving up.”
The senior out of Waco Texas, who suffered a torn ACL injury playing high school football, credits his hard work in strength and conditioning this past fall to his success and keeping him healthy throughout the season.
“I just come in with a mindset to not run for time, but just run to win,” he said.
Silmon also stated that he believes the competition at Hayward always brings out the best in athletes.
“Hayward Field is a very fast track, a lot of fast times have been ran on this track,” he said. “When you come in with that mind frame that ok they have run fast on this track then you say ‘you know I can run fast on this track too’.”
Silmon said his future goals include making the Olympic team and becoming the world’s fastest.
