U. Montana athletic director Jim O’Day and head football coach Robin Pflugrad have been fired, multiple sources in the athletic department have confirmed.
“The University of Montana has determined not to renew the contracts of Athletics Director Jim O’Day and head football coach Robin Pflugrad,” UM officials said in a released statement. “The University will announce an interim athletics director and interim head coach by the end of the week. Further details about the search for permanent replacements will be released as the process develops. We thank Jim and Robin for their dedicated service to the University, and we wish them the best.”
O’Day’s and Pflugrad’s departures come on the heels of several allegations involving the football team.
O’Day begin his tenure atop Grizzly athletics in 2005 and Pflugrad become head coach in late 2009 after a stint as an assistant coach. The Grizzlies went 18-7 in Pflugrad’s two seasons.
Pflugrad was named 2011 Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year.
Update 1:30 p.m.: Vice President Jim Foley said the University will not be commenting on why Pflugrad or O’Day were fired. He said there are no plans to hold a press conference. “The statement will speak for itself,” he said. He told a KPAX crew he would not appear on camera at that moment and when asked if he would today, he told reporters to call him later.
