Charlie Weis has been named the football coach of U. Kansas, according to Kansas Athletics.
“This puts Kansas on the national map,” Athletic Director Sheahon Zenger told ESPN’s Joe Schad.
Weis was the coach at Notre Dame for five seasons, in which he had a 35-27 record and three bowl appearances. In his first two seasons at Notre Dame, Weis went to the Fiesta and Sugar Bowl before going 16-21 in his last three seasons with the Fighting Irish.
This past year, Weis was the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida. His offense at Florida finished 102nd in the country in total yards and 72nd in scoring.
Between his jobs at Notre Dame and Florida, Weis was also the offensive coordinator for theKansas City Chiefs in 2010. In his one season with the Chiefs, the Chiefs improved from a 4-12 record to 10-6, including a playoff appearance. His offense in Kansas City was ranked ninth in the National Football League.
Before he got his first head coaching job at Notre Dame, Weis was the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots. Between 2000-2004, Weis coached under Bill Belichick and helped lead the Patriots to three super bowl victories.
During his time with New England, Weis installed an offense known as the Erhardt-Perkins offensive system.
The offense is versatile, as it has been both a run and pass first offensive scheme in the past. But its roots are on the ground, as most offenses who run the system lean toward running the ball first and using it to set up the pass.
Weis will be introduced at a press conference tomorrow at 5 p.m.
