Larry Fedora hired as new football coach at North Carolina

Fourth-year Southern Miss head football coach Larry Fedora has accepted the same position at U. North Carolina at Chapel Hill, reports the Winston-Salem Journal (N.C.). Fedora led the Golden Eagles to 11 wins, a school record, and the school’s fifth Conference USA championship this season.

Fedora had a 33-19 record at USM, his first head coaching job, and will now take over at the Atlantic Coast Conference school after it fired its head coach, Butch Davis, in July.

The Golden Eagles were guided to three bowl games in the Fedora Era (1-2). In 2008, USM defeated Troy in the New Orleans Bowl in his first season, but lost to Middle Tennessee State in the 2009 New Orleans Bowl. Last sesason, Southern Miss was defeated by Louisville in the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl.

This season, Fedora and the Golden Eagles took home the Conference USA title, but did not receive a bid to the Liberty Bowl. Fedora and his staff chose the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl and has been under fire for this decision by fans and supporters. No word has been announced on plans for interim coach for the bowl game.
