Bolden’s mother questions decision to transfer

By Audrey Snyder

Freshman quarterback Rob Bolden intends to ask Penn State for his release either today or Wednesday, his mother Tonia Williams said.

Bolden’s desire to leave Penn State came as a surprise to his mother, but after speaking with Rob on Monday, Williams said his mind is completely set on the transfer.

“It is true that he is trying to transfer,” Williams said. “I believe he and his dad left [Tampa] this morning to go and get his release papers as soon as they can. I disagree 100 percent, but I have to support him. He’s old enough to make his own decision, and it’s his decision.”

Williams said she told Rob he was making a decision too quickly, and that he should wait until the spring to see if he could win back his starting job, yet her advice seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

Bolden’s father previously said Rob had intentions to leave the program, and while he said the decision was made prior to the bowl game, Williams wasn’t sure when Rob made up his mind.

After completing his first semester, where Williams said Rob earned a 3.0 grade-point average, she said her son loved everything about Penn State, and that’s why making his sudden desire to play football elsewhere surprised her.

“I hope somebody’s able to talk to him,” she said. “His dad has a lot of influence over him, and that may have played a big part in it, but when he made up his mind, I’m not sure. I told him to wait it out and see. See if you go back in next year, watch and learn, but my words didn’t help.”

Though Rob wasn’t used to standing on the sidelines, Williams said he never complained to her about it, although she said it was probably in the back of his mind.

Not sure what schools her son would consider transferring to, Williams plans to speak with Rob when he returns to Michigan in the coming days, but she fears it’s already too late.

“I told him everything has its season, and maybe this was your season to sit out because you are a freshman, and it doesn’t happen a lot where a freshman goes in and starts,” she said. “But it’s kind of hard to pick Rob’s brain, and I don’t know what he’s thinking. But he’s with his dad now, and Rob said he’s transferring, and so, I’ll have to support his decision.”
