A U. California-Berkeley fraternity member was found dead in his house with a gunshot wound early Friday morning in an apparent suicide.
Officers from the Berkeley Police Department responded to a 911 call at the house on the 2400 block of Warring Street at approximately 3:11 a.m., after the student was found unresponsive in his room by another fraternity member, according to a statement from Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. The student was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Berkeley Fire Department, and a preliminary investigation indicates he is the victim of a suicide, according to the statement.
Foul play is not suspected. The student’s body and evidence have been collected by Alameda County Coroner Office deputies, the statement reads.
Investigator C. Brewer with the coroner’s bureau of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday night that the student was 24 years old and that the cause of death was a gunshot to the head.
The Berkeley Police Department is not yet releasing the student’s name or the name of the fraternity due to the sensitive nature of the incident and so family members can by notified first, according to the statement.
“Whenever there is a suicide of any kind in the city of Berkeley or student community, it is emotional and upsetting to all involved,” Kusmiss said in an e-mail.
