Incoming freshman Josh Selby’s eligibility came into question Thursday from a CBSsports.com report.
The Rivals.com No.1 recruit has not been cleared to play by the NCAA due to questions regarding his amateur status, CBSsports.com reported. Selby’s relationship with Robert “Bay” Frazier, the manager for NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, is the primary subject of the investigation. Selby, Anthony and Frazier are all natives of the Baltimore area.
The NCAA maintains that a student-athlete may have a relationship with an agent or manager like Frazier, but may not enter into an agreement to be represented by him or receive benefits from him.
Kansas had questions in the past on former players’ eligibility, including current players Marcus and Markieff Morris and 2008 championship team member Brandon Rush. Coach Bill Self isn’t worried. University policy dictates that Self may not comment on recruits prior to the start of fall semester, but he did say it is not uncommon for the NCAA to further investigate top recruits.
This marks the second consecutive year the top-rated recruit on Rivals.com has faced eligibility concerns. John Wall had to sit out two games and repay expenses to the total of $787.58.
“I will say as we have experienced in the past in our program, ” Self said, “it is not at all unusual for the NCAA to look into many of the country’s top-rated recruits each year for any number of reasons.”
Selby’s mother Maeshon Witherspoon also addressed questions about her son’s eligibility.
““I personally don’t see any problems with the NCAA,” Witherspoon told the Lawrence Journal-World. Josh has not yet been cleared. I’m sure there are other kids have not been cleared as standard procedure. I don’t anticipate us having any problems whatsoever with the NCAA.”
