An Ohio U. student has sued former basketball player Armon Bassett after he was allegedly punched in the face by the basketball star in May while working the door at Courtside Pizza and Bar.
The plaintiff, John Willis, seeks $275,000 in damages from Bassett, according to documents from the Athens County Court of Common Pleas. Willis alleges that Bassett approached him while he was working the door to try to gain access to the bar.
Willis denied Bassett access because of a substantial line that Bassett passed. Willis claims that Bassett struck him in the face and that he suffered a fractured nose from the blow. Willis also claims he did not provoke Bassett and the incident caused him debilitating humiliation and stress.
The plaintiff, represented by Scott Oxley, seeks $250,000 in punitive damages and $25,000 in compensatory damages, according to court documents.
Bassett is also facing a misdemeanor assault charge stemming from the incident. He was suspended from the team indefinitely following the arrest on May 1, nine days after he declared for the NBA Draft.
After he went undrafted, the New Orleans Hornets signed Bassett to their team for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Bassett averaged 2.3 points per game in three games – including one start – for the Hornets.
The Terre Haute, Ind., native led the Bobcats to the NCAA Tournament in his only season in Athens. He led the team in scoring with 17.1 points per game and was named the MVP of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
Bassett averaged 29 points per game in the tournament, which the Bobcats won as the ninth-seeded team – the lowest seed ever to do so.
