Ponder, Hudson named preseason All-ACC

Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder and offensive guard Rodney Hudson were recently named as the only two Seminoles selected to the All-ACC preseason team, which was voted on by league media at the July 25-26 ACC Football Kickoff and released Wednesday.

The two Seminole seniors were named to the 23-member squad following the tabulation of 52 media member ballots from the two-day event at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.

In all, 20 of 23 honorees earned first or second team All-ACC honors last fall.

The three remaining players earned honorable mention honors last fall.

Ponder—the media pick for ACC Preseason Player of the Year—was an honorable mention selection in 2009 after his season was cut short by a shoulder injury suffered in the ninth game, a road loss to Clemson.

Ponder led the ACC last season in total offense with 321.8 yards per game—the sixth highest single-season total in league history.

Hudson, meanwhile, (an undeniable first-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft barring any setbacks) is bidding to become only the seventh player in ACC history— and just the first offensive lineman—to be selected to the All-ACC team for four consecutive seasons.

Hudson was a second team All-ACC choice as a freshman in 2009 and earned first team honors in 2008 and ’09.

North Carolina, which finished sixth nationally last year in total defense, led all ACC schools with five players selected (all of whom sit on the defensive side of the ball).

UNC named defensive end Robert Quinn, defensive tackle Marvin Austin linebacker Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney and safety Deunta Williams to the list.

Boston College was second with four players selected, followed by Clemson and Miami with three each.
