Column: T.O. too late for comeback with Bengals

By Ryan Simonin

Former Buffalo Bills wide receiver Terrell Owens will trade in his red and blue jersey for the orange and black stripes of the Cincinnati Bengals.

While T.O. is coming off a sub-par year with the Bills, can he come into Cincinnati and contribute to another AFC North Divisional Championship?

There is a slim chance T.O. will bring a championship to Cincinnati, but Owens’ numbers last year speak volumes about the kind of player he is today.

Last year, Owens posted 55 receptions for 829 yards with an average 15.1 yards and only caught five touchdowns. Those stats are almost as bad as his rookie season where he racked up 35 receptions for 520 yards with four touchdowns. Also, he was fourth highest among the league last year in dropped passes with nine muffs. Somebody needs to send T.O some Gorilla Glue so he can hold onto that football.

Maybe Owens’ numbers last year are a testament to his age. After all he is going to be 37 before the end of the season. Even the Bengals seem to think he is on a decline as he signed a one-year deal for only $2 million, which is pocket change compared to what he was getting in Philadelphia and Dallas.

The one-year deal also reflects the concern of Cincinnati management on past issues regarding T.O. In past seasons, Owens has made quite the reputation for being outspoken and mouthy about teammates and this season all eyes will watch to see how Owens and Chad Ochocinco will share the spotlight on the team. It is only a matter of time before those two realize there may not be a spotlight bright enough to shine on both of them.

While Owens is inheriting a better offense in Cincinnati with Ochocinco, Carson Palmer and Cedric Benson, it might not matter because a dropped pass is a dropped pass no matter who is throwing the ball.

Clearly, Owens is not immortal and his age is starting to catch up to him.

Another reason why T.O. won’t bring a championship to the Bengals is the fact that the AFC North is too good. T.O. will be silenced when the Bengals have to play Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Both teams have tough defenses, which will make it hard for Owens to be more than just a name on the back of a jersey. Also, Owens has not shown he is double coverage material anymore, which means defenses will be all over Ochocinco.

Even with Owens, the Cincinnati Bengals are still not the team to beat in the AFC North.
