The oil spill has affected the entire country. Many people are trying to find solutions or at least things the public can do to help the relief efforts.
One of the ideas that has been thrown around is to boycott BP.
Although this may seem like a great idea, it is actually flawed.
To cause any sort of damage, the whole country would have to follow through with the boycott.
Just getting one area to boycott BP would be hard.
Getting the entire country to do the same would be nearly impossible.
If the whole country did follow and boycott BP, then BP would go bankrupt.
If BP goes bankrupt, how are they supposed to pay for the oil cleanup, and how can they pay back all of those that have been out of business because of it?
Boycotting BP would only hurt those that need compensation from BP.
If the company is bankrupt, no one will be getting money or relief help from them.
Another problem with boycotting BP is that most BP gas stations are locally owned and ran.
Some of them do not even get their oil from BP.
If the gas stations are boycotted, then the local owners and workers will be affected and lose their jobs.
Also, the local areas could be affected.
If all a small town has is a BP gas station, then if that station is not making revenue, the whole town could be affected economically.
The boycotting of BP could also affect the economy as a whole.
The economy needs spending and selling.
The best way to help with the oil spill is to get the public to join together and to get the politicians to act.
If the public cares and wants something done, then the politicians will want to act and find a solution to help with the problem.
Boycotting BP will only cause more harm than good.
The only thing the public should be doing is joining together and making sure the political figures are staying involved.
In a time of disaster, Americans need not to point fingers and boycott, but to ban together and make sure the correct actions are taking place. It is more important to worry about how to fix the spill than to blame someone for it.
The most beneficial way to get action is to make sure politicians stay involve. The more people that care about the spill and voice their opinions about it, the more likely politicians will step and do something about it.
So keep going to BP and getting gas, because we need BP to help pay for the damage the spill has caused.
