For Ohio guard Armon Bassett, tonight is the night.
Bassett, fresh off a season in which he led the Bobcats to the Mid American Conference championship and an historic upset of Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament, will wait and see if he is selected in tonight’s NBA Draft.
“I never stopped believing,” Bassett said after working out with the Washington Wizards on Tuesday. “You’ve got to be tough mentally.”
ESPN.com analyst Chad Ford has projected Bassett as a late second round to undrafted player.
Bassett led the Bobcats in scoring this winter, averaging 17.1 points per game.
The Terre Haute, Ind. native scored 32 points in Ohio’s 97-83 victory against Georgetown, which was the Bobcat’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2005.
Despite a solid statistical season for the Bobcats, Bassett’s draft value may have fallen after off-the-court problems.
Bassett bounced from school to school during his time as a collegiate athlete. Prior to his season as a Bobcat he appeared on the rosters of both Indiana University and University of Alabama-Birmingham.
This May, Bassett was suspended indefinitely by Ohio after he was arrested in Athens for punching a bar bouncer in the face.
If selected in tonight’s draft, Bassett will be one of the few Bobcats in recent years to make the jump from playing in The Convo to on an NBA court.
The last OU basketball player drafted in the first round of the NBA Draft was forward Gary Trent, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1995 after three seasons at OU.
