Razorback basketball makes progress in APR

The Arkansas Razorback basketball will not face any penalties based on its Academic Progress Rate after facing a potential scholarship loss last year.

The program was below the benchmark of 925, as the team has posted a 866 four-year average. But the number will not cost the Razorbacks this time around after the 2008-2009 academic year APR number improved to 947.

“We continue to closely monitor our APR performance in men’s basketball and have taken a number of strategic measures to address the core issues,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said in a press release. “I am confident that we have employed an aggressive approach that will result in continued improvement.”

Arkansas head coach John Pelphrey said it will still take time to make positive improvements on the number with several future seasons.

“As a coaching staff and a program, we are focused on developing our student-athletes on and off the court,” Pelphrey said in a press release. “While I am encouraged by strides we have made in the past year, we still have work to do.”

Arkansas exceeded the 925 bench mark in 18 of its 19 sports programs for the second straight year, while gymnastics, volleyball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and swimming all posted 1,000 for the last academic year.

“I am pleased that the majority of our sports have once again exceeded the benchmark and are making measurable progress in APR,” Long said. “It is a credit to the efforts of our more than 460 Razorback student-athletes, coaches and staff that our program continues to achieve academically while competing athletically in the Southeastern Conference and nationally.
