Heisman hopeful Mallett undergoes second surgery on foot

U. Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett underwent a procedure Wednesday evening to replace a screw in his left foot, according to a UA press release.

The surgery replaced the screw inserted after Mallett broke a bone in his foot Feb. 17 in an offseason conditioning drill. The junior began participating in throwing drills during the third week of spring practice, but was otherwise relegated to the sideline. Sophomore Tyler Wilson handled first-team reps with Mallett sidelined.

“We fully anticipated this would need to be done in early to mid-June and the timing of it was intentional to allow him to prepare for the season as much as possible during the summer months,” Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino said in the release. “He will be non-weight bearing for the next two weeks and I expect Ryan to return fully after that time period.

“I am completely confident in our athletic trainers and medical staff and the plan they have put in place for Ryan.”

Mallett threw for 3,624 yards, 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2009, breaking or tying 16 school records in his first season as a Razorback. The 6-foot-7, 238-pounder led the Hogs to an 8-5 record and a Liberty Bowl victory over East Carolina.
