Music Interview: Mike Posner

By Amanda Lucci

J Records recording artist Mike Posner recently graduated from Duke University, but he’s not your typical 22-year-old.

After landing a record deal last year, Posner recorded two mix tapes and his debut album while finishing his education. “Cooler Than Me,” the first single off the as-yet-untitled CD to be released this summer, is currently climbing the Billboard charts. Posner will perform at Saturday’s 7Fest, hitting the stage at 4:30 p.m. in the heart of a lineup that includes local favorites Jesty Beatz and Downplay.

The Post’s Amanda Lucci spoke with Posner about balancing college with a music career, recording his new album and the secret to his high-energy performances.

The Post: You attended Duke University while recording your album. What was it like splitting your time between college and music?

Mike Posner: I actually just graduated in December. It was definitely difficult, I won’t lie. I knew it was gonna be difficult. I signed a major record deal the summer after my junior year, and for all intents and purposes, I could’ve dropped out of school. … My mom and a lot of people in my family have done a lot for me to have an opportunity to go to a school like Duke and a lot of people don’t get that opportunity. I’m proud of what I’ve done.

Post: You have become known for your mix tapes. Will your debut album be similar?

Posner: … It’s not like I’m just throwing this together in the last few months, I’ve been working on this for over a year. Even when I’ve been putting out these mix tapes, I’ve been saving the best songs for the record. People can just expect their minds to be blown. … (It will be) my mix tapes on steroids.

Post: What can people expect from your live show?

Posner: Basically, at my shows, I create an environment where it’s OK to lose your … mind. I went to a lot of shows as a kid. I remember convincing my mom to take me to OutKast in seventh grade, and I remember she fell asleep with earplugs in her ears. What I hated about those shows is I would always be rocking out and dancing and I would look at my friends and they would be afraid … to have fun with the music …

Post: You’ve tweeted about how excited you are to play at 7Fest. Why is this particular show so appealing?

Posner: I’m super excited to do this show – I want (everyone) to know that. I really can’t wait. Even though I’m doing shows every night, I’ve had this date marked on my calendar. … I just look forward to having fun with everybody, and I know how crazy the atmosphere is and how fun it is. I’m just gonna pour gasoline on it and light it on fire.
