After Big Ten tournament loss to Ohio State, Gophers season may be over

By: Jack Satzinger

CHICAGO — One of them laid next to a heap of athletic tape on the locker room floor. The other was still laced up to DeAndre Mathieu’s left foot. After Minnesota’s 79-73 loss to Ohio State on Thursday night at the United Center, the senior guard sat like that for about 10 minutes.

His black Nike sneakers still have plenty of tread left, but they might not be played in again — not in a Gophers uniform anyway. That’s what bothers him the most.

Pitino sparks Gophers to 62-58 victory

By: Jack Satzinger

In the first half of Minnesota’s game against Purdue on Saturday Richard Pitino felt a little too hot, so he took off his suit jacket.

When the Gophers head coach emerged from the locker room at halftime and his team down 31-27, his tie was gone, too.

With the top button of his powder blue dress shirt unclasped, an animated Pitino willed his players to a 14-0 run to open the second period in an eventual 62-58 victory.

Williams to enter NFL Draft

By: Grant Donald

After weeks of discussion with family, coaches and former teammates, Gophers tight end Maxx Williams announced Friday that he will enter the 2015 NFL Draft instead of returning to the University of Minnesota for his junior season.

The decision comes less than 24 hours after the Gophers lost to No. 16 Missouri 33-17 in the Citrus Bowl, where Williams racked up 98 receiving yards including a highlight reel 54-yard touchdown.

Leidner outshined by Barrett in 31-24 loss

By: Jack Satzinger

By the time the Gophers escaped the snow and filed through TCF Bank Stadium’s tunnel toward their locker room, they had come within a play or two of beating one of the best teams in the nation.

But when Minnesota (7-3, 4-2 Big Ten) narrowly lost to Ohio State 31-24 on Saturday, there was a sizable gap between each team’s quarterback.

Mitch Leidner completed seven of 19 pass attempts for the Gophers to finish with just 85 yards, throwing two interceptions along the way.

Gophers top Purdue 39-38 in wild game

By: Jack Satzinger

Minnesota beat Purdue on Saturday to improve to 6-1 on the season. The opening line favored the Gophers by 15.5 points — a Minnesota win was the result almost everyone expected.

But it’s safe to say nobody predicted the Gophers (6-1, 3-0 Big Ten) to win 39-38 in a topsy-turvy game of missed extra points, 52-yard field goals, interceptions, called back interceptions, fumbles, fumble calls that were overturned and unsportsmanlike penalties.

Gophers take back the jug

By: Jack Satzinger

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — When Jerry Kill answered questions Saturday night following the University of Minnesota’s 30-14 win at University of Michigan, it almost looked like Minnesota had lost.

The Gophers head coach appeared subdued as he softly spoke about his team’s second victory over the Wolverines since 1986, looking toward his wife Rebecca and daughter Krystal standing in the back of the room.

Last year, Kill didn’t make the trip to Ann Arbor.

He rested at home with his family, recovering from an epileptic seizure as Minnesota lost 42-13.
