Weekend Circulator starts Friday

A new Weekend Circulator bus service will connect the University of Minnesota's East Bank and West Bank starting Friday.

It will run every half hour from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Fridays and from 9:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The route was created as a part of the University's new four-part initiative to improve campus safety.

"It was a priority of the University to address safety and security concerns," University spokesman Matt Hodson said. "This needs to happen, so it will."

Dayton releases bonding proposals, $118.7 million for University projects

Governor Mark Dayton’s bonding proposal released Wednesday provides funding for three University of Minnesota construction projects, totaling $118.7 million.

In its 2014 capital request, the University is asking for $232.7 million from the state this legislative session to fund six projects across the five-campus system.

Dayton’s recommendation provides $56.7 million to renovate the Tate Laboratory of Physics, $12 million for the University’s research laboratory improvement fund and $10 million to renovate the wellness center on the Crookston campus.

City Council passes $1.1 billion 2014 budget

The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved outgoing Mayor R.T. Rybak's final budget Wednesday night, allocating additional funds to improve public safety citywide.

The city’s $1.1 billion 2014 budget includes a reduction in its property tax levy and provides funds for body video cameras for city police officers, jobs in the Minneapolis police and fire departments and more surveillance in the University of Minnesota's district.

University tabs Nanne to lead fundraising

Lou Nanne will lead the Athletic Facilities Fundraising Campaign in hopes of raising the $190 million to help fund new athletics facilities on campus, the University of Minnesota announced Monday.

Nanne, an alumnus of the University and a member of the Gopher Athletic Hall of Fame, was the former general manager of the Minnesota North Stars and currently works as a Senior Managing Director at RBC Global Asset Management, Inc.

Minn. Republicans sue to block Web voter registry

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republicans asked a Minnesota court to block a new online voter registration system Monday, saying it was illegally created by the state's Democratic elections chief.
 
Four GOP lawmakers and a pair of conservative groups filed a lawsuit seeking to suspend the Web-based system pending legislative action next year.
