MANKATO, Minn. – Former Gophers quarterback Philip Nelson exited the Blue Earth County Justice Center on Monday afternoon with a white towel over his head, blocking his face from people questioning his role in an incident that left a man in critical condition.

Protestors could face punishments

University of Minnesota students could face disciplinary action for chanting and holding signs at Coffman Union’s second floor ribbon-cutting ceremony earlier this semester.

Members of the Whose Diversity? student group led the protest and say the University is threatening unwarranted punishments for their March 12 demonstration, but administrators say they’re simply following protocol.

“The charges were not founded,” said senior Tori Hong, a Whose Diversity? member. “All we really did was ask questions and hold up signs.”

Hodges makes first State of the City address

Minneapolis mayor Betsy Hodges applauded new growth in the University of Minnesota’s area and called for more citywide development in her first State of the City address on Thursday.

“We are growing, Minneapolis. We are thriving,” she said to the audience of about 200 people in the Minneapolis American Indian Center’s gymnasium.

New development in the city is boosting revenue and spurring economic growth, she said, noting specific projects in the University’s area.

Protest aside, Condoleezza Rice speaks for sold-out crowd

As protestors chanted and waved signs outside, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of about 2,700 inside Northrop Auditorium on Thursday night.

About 200 protesters paraded around the University of Minnesota’s East Bank campus for about two hours, while nearly a dozen University of Minnesota Police officers monitored the situation.

Former Mayor R.T. Rybak endorses Noor

Former Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak announced his support for Mohamud Noor to represent parts of the University of Minnesota and surrounding neighborhoods in the state Legislature.

The hotly contested 2014 race to out seat 22-term Rep. Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Minneapolis, is causing some to question if her performance truly reflects the district’s evolving community and some think the area should be represented by a new face.

This is the first time for the former mayor to endorse a candidate for the state Legislature.

Fairview names new executive VP and COO

Carolyn Wilson will serve as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Fairview Health Services, the company announced Thursday.

The newly created position includes taking over the duties of Dan Anderson, president of Fairview community hospitals, who announced he’ll leave the company later this year, according to a press release.

Wilson, who began the role on Saturday, also serves as co-president of University of Minnesota Health, the newly created brand for all health services operated jointly by Fairview and the University of Minnesota.

House mulls kill switch bill

Following a series of smartphone thefts on and around the University of Minnesota’s campus, a committee in the Minnesota House of Representatives discussed a proposal Thursday that would make phones useless after they are lost or stolen.

Some testified at the meeting and said in order to deter criminals, a “kill switch” bill should pass. Others argued and said it would be impractical and raise privacy concerns.

Regents OK safety plan, TCF construction

At Friday's meeting, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents approved transferring $4.1 million from the institution's budget into campus safety upgrades.
 
The funds will cover additional security cameras and improved lighting and building security on campus.

Regents approve TCF construction

A University of Minnesota Board of Regents committee approved a plan Tuesday to begin construction on the TCF Bank Stadium to accommodate the Vikings coming in the fall. The full board will vote on the recommendation Friday.

Structural changes include expanding seating capacity, equipping the stadium for Minnesota's January weather by installing heated turf and modifying concessions stands.

The $6.6 million construction project, which the professional football team will pay, will start in March and last until August.
