Men’s track and field remain undefeated

The University of Maine men’s track and field team took first place yet again in their meet this past weekend at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. The women’s team took fourth place overall in the competition against Holy Cross, Bryant University, Stonehill College, Colgate University and the University of Massachusetts.

On the women’s side, Ashten Hackett got the meet started with a win during the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.53 seconds.

Jaclyn Masters competed in the 200-meter dash and took fourth place with a time of 26.49 seconds. Masters went on to compete in the pole vault, placing first with a final height of 3.40 meters.

Ashley Donohoe grabbed a first place spot during the shot put with a final mark of 12.33 meters and continued to throw well, placing third in the discus with a mark of 38.48 meters. During the hammer throw, Emily Boardman placed first with a throw of 48.55 meters.

On the men’s side, the Black Bears recorded a total of 304 points, placing first with several impressive performances.

The 200-meter dash was dominated by Daniel Roukey, Frank Del Duca and Joseph Viola. They took the top three spots with times of 22.78 seconds, 22.89 seconds and 23.21 seconds respectively. Roukey placed first during the 100-meter dash as well with a time of 10.58 seconds.

Viola placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.57 seconds. Teammate Jake Leithiser recorded a first place finish during the 800-meter run with a time of 1:54.60.

During the 1500-meter run, Alexander Moser dominated the field with a time of 3:53.87. Kelton Cullenberg was not far behind with a final time of 3:54.56.

During the throwing events, Wilson Adams took another first place finish during the hammer throw with a distance of 56.88 meters. Justin Gagne competed in the shot put and discus, finishing first in both events. He had a final mark of 16.70 in the shot put and a final mark of 48.80 in the discus.

Shane Corbett and Brian Woodbury took second and third during the discus with final marks of 44.65 and 44.15.

First and second place finishes were earned during the javelin throw, with Aybars Gungor finishing first with a distance of 56.72 meters and Tristan Wortman finishing second with a distance of 55.62 meters.

Connor Harris, Assad Hicks, Tyler Martin and Joseph Slattery all competed in the high jump. Harris placed second with a mark of 1.88 meters, while Hicks and Martin tied for fourth and Slattery came in sixth.

The long jump was dominated by Herby Lafortune, who had a final mark of 6.25 meters. Harris finished third with a mark of 6.04 meters.

Nathaniel Meade took the triple jump with a final mark of 14.56 meters. Devin Burgess placed second during the pole vault with a final mark of 4.25 meters.

The men’s and women’s teams will compete in the Penn Relays April 24, 25 and 26.

UMaine track and field compete in Wildcat Invitational

The University of Maine track and field team returned to Durham, N.H. this past weekend to compete in the Wildcat Invitational. The women’s team finished third overall, while the men’s team grabbed another first place victory.

On the women’s side, Ashten Hackett finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.63 seconds. Jaclyn Masters finished in third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.69 seconds.

Katelyn Guilmette, Hackett, Grace MacLean and Jessica McCarthy finished in second place with a time of 49.24 seconds in the 4×100 meter relay.

In the distance events, Annabelle Wilson and Carolyn Stocker finished fourth and fifth during the 5000-meter with times of 18:41.66 and 19:10.04, respectively.

Ashley Donohoe took fourth place in the discus throw with a final mark of 40.10 meters. Helen Manning took third in the jump events with a final height of 1.47 meters.

Masters took second place in the pole vault with a final mark of 3.27 meters.

On the men’s side, the Black Bears grabbed the top four spots during the 800-meter. Alexander Moser finished in first place, while teammates Jake Leithiser, Liam Nee and Jacob Johns were all close behind.

During the 400-meter hurdles, Michael Lucas finished second with a time of 55.77 seconds while Daniel Roukey took the first place spot with a time of 22.15 seconds in the 200-meter. Joseph Viola followed behind in second place with a time of 22.35 seconds.
Derrek Shultz and Levi Frye competed in the 3000-meter steeplechase to earn second and third place. Shultz had a time of 10:06.47 and Frye was not far behind with a time of 10:11.53 seconds.

The 4×100-meter relay was dominated once again by the team of Roukey, Frankie Del Duca, Nathaniel Meade and Viola, finishing with a winning time of 42.21 seconds.

The men’s jumping events also saw Black Bear success. Julian Hubbard, Herby Lafortune, Derek Burgess and Miguel Caballero finished in second through fifth place during the long jump.

The men’s team took the first three spots in the triple jump with Meade, Harris and Hubbard finishing first, second and third, respectively. Meade finished with a mark of 14.83 meters, Harris placed second with a mark of 13.97 meters, and Hubbard placed third with a mark of 13.80 meters.

Connor Harris, Tyler Martin and Assad Hicks competed in the high jump, with Harris earning second with a final mark of 1.90 meters. Hicks and Martin tied for third place.

Wilson Adams dominated the hammer throw once again with a final mark of 55.92 meters. Justin Gagne grabbed a first place spot in the shot put with a final throw of 16.69 meters.

UMaine will travel to the College of the Holy Cross to compete in a two-day meet April 16-17.

Men’s track takes first at UNH

The University of Maine track and field teams competed in their first outdoor meet in Durham, N.H. this past weekend. The men’s team finished in first place while the women’s finished third in a field that consisted of the University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University and the College of the Holy Cross.

There were some outstanding results from both sides.

On the women’s side, Naomi Holzhauer finished fourth in the 800 meter with a time of 2:26.66, while Katelyn Guilmette finished fourth with a time of 12.85 seconds in the 100 meter dash. During the 400, Lauren Roush earned another fourth-place finish with a time of 1:02.70.

During the field events, Jaclyn Masters dominated the pole vault taking first place with a mark of 3.42 meters. Ashley Donohoe, Emily Boardman and Ashley Griffin competed in the throwing events and took the top three spots for the Black Bears. During the shot put, Donohoe finished second with a mark of 11.82 meters, while Boardman took third in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.10 and Griffin finished third in the javelin with a mark of 31.60 meters.

For the 4×100 meter relay event, Hackett, Roush, Masters and McCarthy came in third place with a time of 50.05 seconds. UNH took first place in the 4×100 meter.

On the men’s side, it was a Black Bear-dominated field with some strong performances and plenty of first-place finishes. The distance runners finished in the top few spots during the 1500 meter run. Alexander Moser, Thomas Salamone and Justin Tracy finished in second through fourth place.

Moser, Jesse Orach and Kelton Cullenberg finished in the top three spots as well during the 3000 meter. Cullenberg came in first and had a personal best with a time of 8:29.89 while his teammates were close behind. Moser and Orach finished in second and third with times of 8:49.63 and 8:51.31.

During the field events, Nathaniel Meade and Connor Harris both finished with top spots. Harris topped the high jump with a final mark of 1.90 meters, and Meade dominated the long jump with a final mark of 6.43 meters.

During the triple jump, Meade finished first again with a mark of 14.13 meters. His teammates Hubbard and Harris were right behind with final marks of 13.53 and 13.42.

The Black Bears led the throwing events while Brian Woodbury and Justin Gagne finished second and third in the shot put. Gagne finished first during the discus throw with a mark of 47.04 meters.

Wilson Adams came in second during the hammer throw with a final distance of 53.55 meters. Alexander Parenteau grabbed a first place spot in the javelin throw with a final mark of 57.76 meters.

The sprinting events were dominated by Daniel Roukey, who took first place in both the 100 meter dash [10.95] and the 200 meter dash [22.16]. Teammate Frank Del Duca took third during the 100-meter with a time of 11.14 seconds. During the 400-meter dash, Joseph Viola placed second with a time of 50.65 seconds.

James Rutter took second in the hurdles with a time of 15.46. Michael Lucas had a third place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.34.

Jake Leithiser took third in the 800-meter with a time of 1:56.99 seconds. The 4×400 meter relay team of Roukey, Lucas, Viola and Scott Merrill.

The Black Bears will be back in action next week when they return to Durham, N.H. to compete in the Wildcat Invitational.

Track and Field record several personal bests at Boston University

The University of Maine men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University over the weekend, with the women’s team competing on Friday and the men’s on Saturday. There were impressive results from each side as they set many individual best marks at the invitational despite coming up short in the team competition.

UMaine’s Rachel Wilkinson competed in the mile run and finished with a time of 5:07.61, topping her previous best time of 5:15.52. Wilkinson’s teammate Jaclyn Masters set a new personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.51.32.

The personal bests continued for the Black Bears during the weight throw as Emily Boardman  recorded a final toss of 51’-01.75. Boardman finished in the top 10 at the invitational. Robyn McFetters recorded a toss of 49’-11.25 during the weight throw to place 13th in the event.

The women performed well during the shot put as well. Alexis Wessels and Ashley Donohoe both competed in the shot put. Wessels finished 35th with a throw of 33’-01.75, while Donohoe grabbed 16th with a throw of 39’-01.00.

Grace MacLean of Bangor competed in the pole vault as well as the high jump. In the pole vault, MacLean finished with a final mark of 10’-06.00. In the high jump, she finished with a final mark of 5’-03.00.

Ashten Hackett competed in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.04 seconds that barely beat out her previous time from an event at the College of the Holy Cross last week. Katelyn Guilmette took 47th place during the 60-meter with a time of 8.14 seconds.

Shannon O’Neil ran for a time of 1:21.70 during the 500-meter dash. Teammate Kelsey Maxim was right behind, finishing with a time of 1:21.99 in the event.

On the men’s side, Jake Leithiser finished the 500-meter with a personal best time of 1:06.42. Daniel Roukey also set a season best during the 200-meter with a time of 22.42 seconds.

Kelton Cullenberg competed in the 5000-meter run, finishing with a time of 14.28.13. He finished 14th overall in the event. Liam Nee competed in the 800-meter, finishing with a time of 1:52.12 for yet another seasonal best.

During the 60-meter hurdles, James Reed placed third overall with a time of 7.99 seconds. Joseph Viola set a season best in the 400-meter, clocking in at 49.58 seconds.

During the weight throw, Wilson Adams snagged a fourth place finish with a final mark of 18.32 meters. His teammate Justin Gagne recorded a throw of 16.80 meters, which earned him a ninth place finish.

Continuing the personal bests during the field events was Julian Hubbard, who finished in 24th place during the long jump with a final mark of 6.48 meters. He placed eighth during the triple jump with a final mark of 13.87 meters.

The pole vault was represented by Black Bear Tristan Wortman, who also set a new season best with a height of 15’-03.00, earning him a ninth place finish. During the shot put, Justin Gagne placed second with a final throw of 17.36 meters.

The men’s and women’s teams will host their rivals the University of New Hampshire at a home meet Feb. 15. The meet will take place in the New Balance Field House at 12 p.m.

UMaine Swimming and Diving Compete at Dartmouth

The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the Dartmouth Invitational this past weekend. The men’s team finished fifth overall with a score of 122, while the women’s team finished sixth with a score of 249.

On the men’s side, senior Caleb Hoffman, freshman John Carlucci, sophomore Shane Kinnon and sophomore Matt England took ninth place during the men’s 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:40.13.

Carlucci finished eighth in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:17.82. He also finished eighth in the 200-meter fly with a time of 2:00.41.

Junior David Vittori placed 22nd in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 49.70 seconds. England finished 12th during the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 54.90 seconds, and Hoffman finished 10th in the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:16.24.

On the women’s side, sophomore Taylor Sharp placed 14th during the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:02.94, freshman Kailey Dowd finished in eighth place during the 1650-meter freestyle with a time of 18:03.01, and senior Shannon Bender placed finished 11th in the 400-meter with a time of 4:45.88. Bender would also place seventh in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:11.87.

The women’s 200-meter medley relay — comprised of junior Naja Harvey, senior Erica Smrcina, freshman Katerina Mosquera-Cardi and senior Lauren Dwyer — placed fourth with a time of 1:51.54.

Senior Kara Capossela snagged ninth place during the 1-meter dive and seventh in the 3-meter dive.

Harvey finished in third place during the 100-meter breaststroke with a time of 1:06.73 while junior Abby Linn and Smrcina finished 18th and 19th, respectively.

Smrcina finished in eighth place in the 100-meter fly with a time of 59.20 seconds, while Dwyer followed up in 16th place with a time of 1:00.23.

The women’s team will host the University of New Hampshire in a conference meet Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. The men’s side doesn’t get back into action until Feb. 28 for the ECAC championships.

Track and Field compete at Joe Donahue Games

The University of Maine’s men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Joe Donahue Games in Worcester, Mass. this past weekend, and both had impressive results. The games were hosted by the College of the Holy Cross.

On the men’s side, Daniel Roukey took third place during the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.56 seconds, while teammate Jake Leithiser took fourth during the 400-meter with a time of 49.96 seconds.

Nathaniel Meade grabbed a first-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 15.07 meters. Teammate Brian Woodbury finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.51 meters, and Liam Nee finished fifth during the 800-meter run with a final time of 1:56.06.

For the women, Robyn McFetters finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 14.71 meters.

During the field events, Jaclyn Masters finished fourth place in the pole vault with a height of 10 meters, 11.75 inches. The first place finisher was Williams College senior Jenna Adams with a height of 12-05.50.

UMaine senior Ashten Hackett finished second place in the 60-meter hurdles with an impressive time of 9.06 seconds.

Junior James Reed, Adam Wilson and Justin Gagne competed in the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University Saturday afternoon.

Reed stole the show once again, taking first in the 60-meter hurdles by just a .02 second margin with a time of 8 seconds, just .03 seconds shy of the school record he set last season.

Gagne finished sixth in the shot put with a throw of 16.52 meters and 16th in the weight throw with a final distance of 15.41 meters. Wilson took sixth in the weight throw with a mark of 18.20 meters.

The Black Bears will get their first taste of the newly revamped New Balance Track and Field facility when they host Holy Cross Feb. 1 at 11 a.m.
