“Zahui-mania” has hit the national level.
Stretching beyond the “Wowie Zahui” sign that made its appearance at the Gophers’ last home game, athletes are jumping on the fan bandwagon and taking to social media.
Just more than an hour after redshirt sophomore Amanda Zahui B.’s 39-point, 29-rebound performance last Tuesday — which broke program records — “Zahui” was one of the top trending words for Minnesota Twitter users.

Bikers and pedestrians who frequent the two-block stretch of Sixth Avenue Southeast that runs near the Stone Arch Bridge will get updated scenery come May.
Area leaders voted to put more than $5,000 toward planting flowers and grasses along the street in an effort to make the unsightly stretch between University Avenue Southeast and Main Street Southeast more attractive and help promote the city’s bike paths.

Down 5-3 in the sixth inning of the Gophers’ final game of the weekend on Sunday, junior Sydney Fabian blasted a home run to tie the game.
Over the weekend, Minnesota hit 10 home runs en route to five victories.
The Gophers beat New Mexico State, Colorado State, Arizona State, and Boise State, twice, in the Diamond Devil Tournament.
Senior Erica Meyer had three home runs.
“When things didn’t go our way, we battled back for it. We did a good job of that, and we really hit the ball well,” Meyer said.

Minnesota lost all four games in its series against Texas over the weekend, dropping to 0-7 on the season.
And the weekend before wasn’t any better.
The Gophers were outscored 50-7 in their two series against two of the ranked teams from the Lone Star State, making for the program’s worst start since 2002 when Minnesota also opened 0-7.
“We’re definitely disappointed, but we’re not going to get down on ourselves,” sophomore Matt Fiedler said. “We know that these are the top teams in the country.”

Heading into this weekend, no women’s team in program history had ever won four consecutive conference titles.
But Saturday, the women’s swimming team completed that task at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
The Gophers finished the four-day Big Ten championships with 618.5 points, 27.5 points more than second-place Indiana and 140 points ahead of third-place Michigan.
Minnesota has now won the Big Ten title seven times.

Though the Gophers have featured an explosive offense all season, over the weekend — the last of the regular season — they showed they can also lock down on defense.
Thanks to junior Milica McMillen’s game misconduct and another minor penalty later in the third period, the Gophers found themselves on the penalty kill for seven of the last 12 minutes while holding on to a one-goal lead.
But none of Bemidji State’s chances produced goals, allowing the Gophers to hang on for a 4-2 victory. The win completed the sweep after a 3-2 victory on Friday.

Travis Boyd refused to brag.
When asked about his breakthrough year last Wednesday, the senior forward barely mentioned himself before praising his teammates for minutes.
It was simply his weekend, Boyd said.
But it’s been “his weekend” for the last few.
This year alone, Boyd has scored 13 goals — the same number he racked up during his first three years with the Gophers. The skater, who arrived on the University of Minnesota campus four years ago at age 17, is finally hitting his stride.

The last time Minnesota faced the rest of the conference, it took home the Big Ten championship title.
The result was different this time, as the Gophers finished seventh in Big Ten match play in Palm Coast, Fla.
“All [the] matches were very close,” head coach John Carlson said. “[Match play] provides us a way to handle the nerves when stroke play starts.”
Some Gophers played all four rounds — 72 holes — which is a lot for any type of player, amateur or professional.

As the Gophers left the ice for the second intermission Saturday, head coach Brad Frost planned a quick detour to the coaches’ room to check on a game happening more than 600 miles away.
Much to his liking, Frost found Ohio State had completed the upset of No. 3 Wisconsin, opening the door for No. 2 Minnesota to clinch the WCHA title if it could break the scoreless tie against No. 6 Minnesota-Duluth in the third period.
