Buzzer-beater spoils Gophers’ senior day

By: Jack Satzinger

After the Gophers trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half against Penn State on Sunday, Mo Walker and Joey King led a comeback that knotted the score at 76 with 14 seconds remaining.

Head coach Richard Pitino raised his hands, imploring the crowd to get on its feet as DJ Newbill brought the ball up the court. The Penn State guard rose from the top of the key and shot over Nate Mason’s outstretched arms.

Bang.

When the scoreboard at Williams Arena read the final score of 79-76, the 12,412 fans in attendance stood with shocked looks on their faces.

And they weren’t.

Gophers focus on putting

By: Brad Bobel

After their lackluster performance in the UCF Challenge, the Gophers used their three-week break to regroup and focus on the upcoming Miami Hurricane Invitational.

Despite the tie for eighth place in Orlando earlier this month, freshman Sabrine Garrison said the tournament helped shine a light on what they needed to improve.

“The first tournament really showed us where we need to improve our game,” Garrison said. “We responded well.”

During their break, the Gophers mainly worked on aspects of their short game, like putting and chipping.

Gophers men, women place second

By: Brad Bobel

Emotions were high Saturday night when Minnesota honored seniors Jenny Covers and Cierra Tomson at the end of the meet.

Their families looked on as Minnesota finished second, scoring 194.725. Iowa took the crown posting a 195.000, and New Hampshire rounded out the trio in last place.

“Lots of emotions going on. It’s really cool to have so much family here to support the both of us [seniors],” Tomson said. “It was cool to compete as a senior and get recognized [tonight].”

Minnesota sweeps Florida Gulf Coast on the road

By: Ben Gotz

Redshirt senior catcher Matt Halloran stepped to the plate in the seventh inning Friday with the bases loaded, his team locked in a scoreless draw.

The Gophers were searching for their first victory of the season after a 0-7 start against two ranked opponents and staring at their best opportunity of the night.

And after Florida Gulf Coast pitcher Mike Murray delivered, Halloran got his bat on the ball.

A base-clearing single gave the Gophers the cushion they would need in their first victory of the season.

Minnesota’s pitchers falter in three-loss weekend

By: Matt Greenstein

Strong pitching helped the Gophers win all but one of their first 14 games this season.

But over the weekend, while in Florida, Minnesota’s pitching assisted in three losses.

The Gophers won only one of four games.

Last year, then-sophomore Nikki Anderson pitched 42 innings mostly in relief appearances.

But over the weekend, the junior pitched less than five innings, giving up 12 runs — 10 earned.

Minnesota finishes sixth at Big Tens

By: Danny Chen

Minnesota’s 26-year streak of finishing in the Big Ten’s top four is over.

The Gophers finished sixth in the Big Ten championships on Sunday with 359 total team points.

Head coach Kelly Kremer said the Big Ten has become more competitive over time.

“It’s a deep conference, and every single team is really good and really balanced,” he said. “I thought, at large, our team competed well, but we need to be better, no question about it.”

Column: Michigan State victory meaningless without Big Ten tourney success

By: David Nelson

Carlos Morris looked up from the ground and watched as his last-second shot sailed through the hoop at the Breslin

Center.

His 3-pointer against Michigan State with 2.2 seconds to go in the contest sent the game into overtime, and Minnesota’s performance in the extra minutes allowed the Gophers to capture their first victory in East Lansing, Mich., in more than a decade.

The road victory might be Minnesota’s best all season. The team showed determination and offensive prowess against one of the best defensive teams in the Big Ten.

Gophers sit on NIT bubble

By: Jack Satzinger

The Gophers topped Michigan State 96-90 in overtime on Thursday night for arguably their most impressive victory of the season.

An NCAA tournament appearance is highly unlikely at this point — but an NIT berth is looking probable.

That being said, if last season’s NIT field is any indication, the Gophers (17-12, 6-10 Big Ten) need to win one or both of their remaining regular season games to make the second-fiddle tournament.

Taking his mind off basketball

By: Jack Satzinger

Keys started to jingle outside the door of a Marcy-Holmes neighborhood apartment.

Elijah Mathieu knew what came next.

“Da da! Da da!” the 7-month-old shouted as he crawled toward the door.

When it swung open, 22-year-old father DeAndre Mathieu greeted his mini-me.

The Gophers point guard has endured a turbulent senior season. He’s missed two potential game-tying shots. His shooting numbers are down across the board. He’s been in and out of the starting lineup.
