EDITORIAL: The ‘State of the University’ at the end of the spring semester

With this spring semester now drawing to a close, The Daily Free Press editorial board took a step back to evaluate the “State of the University” and look back on some of the issues and events that have shaped life at Boston University in what is — arguably — the first post-pandemic semester.

Gophers baseball split pair of midweek games

After dropping six of their last seven games, Gophers baseball had an opportunity to get back on track with a pair of midweek non-conference opponents.
With an eventual 1-1 split against South Dakota State and St. Thomas the Gophers move to 12-27 on the season.

Slow start costs Gophers against South Dakota State 12-6

On a cold sub-40 degree spring afternoon, LHP Jack Liffrig started on the mound for the Gophers Tuesday. After four productive outings in a row, allowing one earned run or less, Liffrig was not able to find the same success against the Jackrabbits.

He left the top of the third inning allowing seven hits, seven earned runs and recorded only three strikeouts. SDSU took a commanding 10-0 lead after three innings of play.

Minnesota responded in the fourth inning. An RBI double from Ronald Sweeny and a two-run single from Brett Batmean, the lead was cut to 10-3.

Once again the Gophers’ offense caught fire, adding three more runs in the sixth inning. Led by another Bateman RBI, it was an 11-6 ballgame.

It was too little too late for the Maroon & Gold and South Dakota State ultimately left with a 12-6 victory.

Offensive explosion puts Gophers over St. Thomas 9-0

RHP Richie Holetz started on the mound Wednesday for the Gophers. The RHP came to play with four lights-out innings of work, allowing only one hit and zero earned runs while striking out six.

Minnesota’s run support came early and often with all nine of its runs coming in the first three innings.

Brett Bateman and Boston Merila led the way with a team-high three hits. Brady Counsell was the only one-two record multiple RBI, coming on a two-run double in the third inning.

The 9-0 victory over St. Thomas was the Gophers’ first shutout win of the season.
The Gophers will now look ahead to a three-game weekend series in East Lansing, Michigan against the Spartans of Michigan State.

The Intersection: Masks down, Economy Up?

The world of travel is returning to pre-pandemic times regardless of whether all are ready for such a return. I have hope that despite the potential health hazard, our economy will reap the benefits of the lack of masking, a sacrifice that many of us are making.

Colorado State women’s golf finishes 8th at MW tournament

The Colorado State University women’s golf team made their final trip of the season this week as they competed in the 2022 Mountain West Women’s Golf Championship. The tournament was hosted at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California, where teams competed in three rounds from April 18-20.

The fifth-ranked team in the country, San Jose State University, took home the title, while Colorado State finished eighth out of nine teams.

From the start of the tournament, Colorado State struggled to produce momentum for itself. As a team, they shot a collective 307, which put the team in eighth place after round one. Individually, the Rams had a bit of hope, as two golfers, Lacey Uchida and Andrea Bergsdottir, finished round one three over par, which was enough for both of them to be in the top 20 after Monday.

It looked like the Rams had a little bit of fight in them after round two with a team score of 297, which was enough to lift the team into the seventh position after the second round. Uchida and Bergsdottir also saw positive movement in their individual play, with Uchida able to catapult herself into the top 10 with a score of 5 over par after round two. Bergsdottir found herself moving into the top 15 with her score of +6, along with teammate, Sofia Torres, who showed the most movement of any Ram from round one to round two.

Although the team showed some positive results in round two, they were unable to sustain that momentum going into Wednesday’s final round. The team shot a collective score of 305, which allowed the University of Nevada, Reno’s team to leapfrog the Rams and condemn them to an eighth-place finish in the tournament. Uchida achieved a top-15 finish, with a final score of nine over par. Bergsdottir and Torres finished just outside the top 20, as they both tied for 21st with scores of +11.

It wasn’t the finish to the season the Rams would have pictured, but promising performances by underclassmen Uchida and Torres show this team is in good hands and could be contenders in this conference in the coming seasons.

Sam Rockwell takes the lead as the voice of Mr. Wolf, the leader of a pack of criminal animals who decide to pretend to reform their villainous ways. The Bad Guys Release date

In July 2017, several studios had expressed interest in adapting the series into a film. On March 9, 2018, Variety reported that DreamWorks Animation will develop a film based on the book series, with Etan Cohen as writer.

On October 7, 2019, it was reported that the film will be directed by Pierre Perifel in his feature directorial debut, with Cohen and Hilary Winston set to write the film’s screenplay, the film was described  as  having  “a similar twist on the heist genre that  Shrek did   on fairy tales, and what Kung Fu Panda did for the kung fu genre”.

Can I Stream The Bad Guys (2022)

We’ve some bad news if you prefer to enjoy movies in the comfort of your own home. The Bad Guys is a theatrically exclusive movie and, as such, won’t be available on streaming for some time yet.

There is some good news, though. In America, at least, we know that The Bad Guys will come to Universal’s streaming service Peacock 45 days after its theatrical release. After four months, the film is then slated to move to Netflix. Peacock currently operates through Sky and NOW in the UK, so it’s likely the heist movie will be available on those platforms around the same time it hits streaming in the US.

Where to Watch The Bad Guys 2022 free

For now, the only way to watch The Bad Guys is to go to a movie theater. The Bad Guys will open in theaters in the U.S on April 22, 2022. You can find tickets at a theater near you here.

After the movie’s theatrical run, you will be able to stream The Bad Guys on Peacock, the NBC Universal streaming service, and then, eventually, on Netflix. You’ll also be able to rent The Bad Guys on digital platforms like Amazon Prime, iTunes, YouTube, Google Play, and more.

Is ‘The Bad Guys’ on Disney+ or Hulu?

Yes, but you’ll have to put up with it. Earlier this year, Disney and Sony struck a deal to bring Spider-Man and other Sony films to Disney Plus after they’re published on Netflix, beginning with Sony’s 2022 release schedule. Pay 2 windows, which begin 18 months after a film’s release in theaters, will be able to play Sony’s titles like The Bad Guys on Disney platforms. This means that The Bad Guys could be available on Disney streaming services as early as April 2022.

Is The Bad Guys on Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is not streaming The Bad Guys movies. However, the streamer has a wide range of latest movie collections for their viewers, including Train to Busan, The Raid: Redemption, Hell or High Water, The Florida Project, and Burning.

Is The Bad Guys on HBO Max?

No. The Bad Guys is a Universal Pictures movie, not a Warner Bros. movie, and therefore will not be streaming on HBO Max when it opens in theaters. Also, HBO Max will no longer be streaming theatrical movies in 2022. Last year, Warner Media opted to simultaneously release its theatrical slate on streaming, meaning HBO Max subscribers could watch movies like Matrix Resurrections at home. This year, however, Warner Bros. theatrical movies will have a 45-day theaters-only run before moving to HBO Max.

Is The Bad Guys on Netflix?

Not yet. However, The Bad Guys will be on Netflix after its four-month run on Peacock, thanks to a long-running deal between Netflix and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group that gives Netflix exclusive rights in the U.S. to the media company’s animated feature films. Therefore, you can expect to see The Bad Guys on Netflix around October or November 2022, depending on when the film launches on Peacock.

About The Bad Guys Movie (2022)

This American computer-animated crime comedy film is based on the popular series of children’s graphic novels of the same name by author Aaron Blabey.

Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell) and his gangmates Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) get caught after a lifetime of legendary heists.

To avoid the prison sentence and save themselves from living the rest of their lives behind the bars, Mr. Wolf proposes a deal: they shall leave the criminal life and become law-abiding model citizens, making it their most challenging con yet.

Under the guidance of their mentor, Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade), the notorious gang sets out to fool the world by their attempt of turning good, but the situation doesn’t quite pan out as they had expected.

UMN students and student groups make Spring Jam possible

Spring Jam returns, rebooted with more student involvement and free student tickets.

When this year’s Spring Jam organizers got to planning the University’s end of year extravaganza, they had a problem: “People didn’t like Spring Jam; the truth was people were not enjoying it,” Samantha Howell said, this year’s lead coordinator for Spring Jam.

The team of third-year students – Howell, Abbie Hengel, and Genevieve Krause – had never attended Spring Jam due to a two-year pause of the festival. After reviewing copious Spring Jam feedback and old comment sections, they chose to shift the festival’s format.

“We’re not a music festival, we’re a festival with music,” Howell said.

The focus changed from concert to community; highlighting what’s at the University as opposed to in-demand musical guests. With this shift, it felt natural to have Spring Jam host the Battle of the Bands finale, Howell said.

Party Foul, an indie-alternative rock group, is one of four bands competing in the finale. Composed primarily of first-year students, the band formed through Welcome Week activities.

Guitarist Alex Powell recalls how Battle of the Bands felt “like some faraway thing up until a couple months.” As they prepare for their biggest show to date, the band is churning out new songs on a weekly basis without letting the pressure compromise their process.

“We’re all bringing our same amalgam of fun ideas and lyrics, and puzzle-piecing them together to make fun music,” lead vocalist Abby Vela said.

To complement musical acts, Spring Jam will feature dance performances from student groups such as the Choreo Oreos. Combining multiple dance styles, eight choreographers and 20 dancers, this will be the Choreo Oreos’ first entirely original routine.

“I wanted to bring that creative aspect of originality to our dances, rather than copying off a video,” said Stephanie Ye, president of Choreo Oreos.

As a choreographer, Ye said she feels nervous.

“We’re still working on it every practice,” Ye said. “Our roster keeps changing with availability, so we have to change our formations pretty much every week.”

For some dancers, Spring Jam will be their first time on stage. As an experienced performer, Ye said she is excited to get on stage.

From a genre-diverse lineup of musical acts to dance performances, “we designed Spring Jam to make sure it has a little bit of something for everybody,” Hengel said. And designing for everyone means incorporating everyone — including student groups.

UMN Blockchain will be minting NFTs — yes, you can finally own an NFT — and helping set up crypto wallets.

“A lot of people hear about NFTs on the news, but how many have the chance to experience the technology themselves,” said the club’s president Jin Kuan.

Once you purchase an NFT, your ownership can’t be disputed; that NFT is yours unequivocally. That’s the utility of NFTs — proof of ownership. “Blockchain”, the underlying technology for NFTs and cryptocurrencies, “is as much about finance as it is about technology or even politics,” said Danny Bui, UMN Blockchain’s vice president of communications.

The Psychedelic Education Club will be installing a photo backdrop featuring their logo CNC-machined from plywood, an encircling flower mandala and branded records. Try to spot the Easter eggs scattered throughout their layered arrangement.

“That’s a psychedelic idea for me; the more you look into something, you see greater and deeper complexity. That’s what we’re trying somewhat to build into this photo backdrop,” said co-founder Zane Crabtree.

Hosting more than 20 student groups, Spring Jam “isn’t Coachella, isn’t Lollapalooza, we are a university and it is in a parking lot,” Howell said. “With shifted expectations, we can create an event that is fun, free, accessible and enjoyable for everybody. That’s the real goal this year; that has been the goal since the beginning of planning.”

Student tickets to Spring Jam are free this year. Head to Spring Jam’s website to claim yours.

ODU Raises Tuition $470 for In-State Students

Old Dominion University will be raising its tuition rates after the Spring 2022 semester. Students will see an increase in their tuition after the ODU Board of Visitors approved raising the rate on April 22.

Full-time, in-state undergraduate students will see a 2.99% increase in overall costs while graduate students will see a 3.06% increase. Out-of-state tuition rates will not change.

According to ODU’s website: “For the 2022-2023 academic year, full-time in-state undergraduates will pay $11,630 in yearly tuition and mandatory fees, representing a 2.99% tuition increase and 5.57% auxiliary student fee increase. The total increase equates to an additional cost of $470 per student for those taking 30 credit hours a year.”

This marks the first tuition rate increase since 2018. Despite the tuition increase, ODU remains one of the most affordable institutions in Virginia.

Chad Reed, vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer, went before the board to present the tuition rate increase for ODU students.

“You’re not going to find another institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia that has the dedicated faculty, research facilities, infrastructure or such outstanding athletic programs at this price,” Reed said.

“The university faces cost increases, including ongoing inflation, the escalating costs of utilities, and promotion and tenure contractual commitments for teaching and research faculty,” he continued. Reed cited all these factors as necessitating the increase for tuition rates.

ODU’s tuition increase comes in anticipation of the Virginia General Assembly approving the new biennial budget. Part of this includes raising compensation for state employees, which would see ODU’s share of the compensation rise accordingly.

ODU’s plans for the 2022-23 academic year include allocating more funds to a wide range of programs, as well as public safety retention and increasing wages for student workers.

“Old Dominion University will be able to invest in our world-class faculty, facilities and leadership in research,” said President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. “We are committed to maintaining an affordable and accessible path for all students to gain an excellent education at one of the nation’s leading research institutions.”

ODU has also been ranked among top universities for the third year for its performance on social mobility, garnering praise for its success in graduating students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Additionally, ODU was recently awarded the Research 1 Classification from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education in December 2021. This puts ODU in the top bracket of research institutions in the United States.

Utah Baseball Nearly Has Undefeated Week

After a successful week against Arizona, the University of Utah baseball team (23-15-1, 9-9 Pac-12) stayed home to play Brigham Young University before heading to Los Angeles to face USC.

Utah struggled early against BYU, going down 1-5 after the second inning. The desperate Utes quickly regained their composure and took three in the third inning to lessen the gap.

Utah and BYU kept trading runs, and the game was tied going into the bottom of the ninth. Kai Roberts hit the first pitch for a single that would score Davis Cop as the Utes took an 8-7 walk-off win against the Cougars.

The team then took a quick trip to Los Angeles, where they faced the Trojans in a three-game series. USC has had a difficult season, going just 5-13 in conference play. The Utes quickly capitalized in the first game.

It was another dominant performance by Utah, and they completely controlled the game. Utah got on the board early, and never stopped scoring. Utah tallied six runs in the fourth inning, with Utah taking a 9-0 lead.

USC was able to get on the board and eventually found three runs of their own, but it wasn’t enough for them to stop the Utes. Roberts capped off the night with a solo home run in the ninth to secure a 11-3 victory for Utah.

Utah came back the very next day and played a similar game. Utah started hot and never allowed the Trojans an opportunity. Utah jumped out to an 8-0 lead by the fourth inning, taking a commanding lead.

USC was able to get on the board soon after, but it wouldn’t be enough for them. Chase Anderson tripled in the fifth, scoring Dakota Duffalo and Roberts.

It was yet another big win for the Utes as they topped the Trojans 10-5. Utah was on a four-game win streak and looking to go undefeated this week.

But Utah was unable to finish the week strong, and they fell to USC. It was a very different game than the first two. The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when USC got three.

Utah started clawing back in the sixth and seventh, but it wouldn’t be enough for them and they lost 2-4 in the final game of the week.

It was a poor ending to the week for the Utes, but they showed a lot of skill this week. Utah has now broke even in Pac-12 play, going 9-9 on the year.

The Utes will head home to take on Dixie State before facing No. 2 Oregon State, their toughest opponent of the year. Utah will have their work cut out for them, but can be optimistic about how successful they have been recently.
