From Donda Dove to ODU Monarch: Bryce Baker’s Court Career

This article first appeared in the spring 2023 Mace & Crown magazine issue.

Monarchs might know Bryce Baker as the 6-foot-5, 190 pound freshman guard they’ve seen scoring in Chartway Arena. They also might know him as #12 from the 2021-2022 Donda Doves roster of Kanye West’s Donda Academy.

Baker grew up in Mooresville, just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, which he described as “a growing town.” He conjured a relatively average childhood, saying, “I grew up with my mom, and she [worked] a lot. I went to school, played a lot of different sports, and hung out with friends.” He started playing basketball at the YMCA at a young age, but “never started taking it seriously until [he] got to high school.”

Baker began playing on the high school circuit at Davidson Day High School for the 2018-2019 season. Davidson Day, a private school in Davidson, North Carolina, has long had a strong athletic reputation, and is no stranger to victory in basketball. In 2019, Baker and the Davidson Day Patriots won a state championship title.

In his sophomore year, Phenom Hoop Report called Baker “the ultimate glue guy. Very much a winning player who makes winning plays on both ends. He’ll catch college coaches’ eyes immediately after they first see him.”

From there, Baker transferred to Combine Academy in Lincolntown, North Carolina, which describes itself as an “international boarding school” with “students and clients from 50+ countries and 50 states.” Playing for the aptly named Combine Goats, Baker won himself another state title in 2020.

While enrolled in Combine, Baker played for Amateur Athletic Union’s Team Charlotte, which played on the 17U Under Armor Association (UAA) Circuit. He was the highest ranked isolation defender in his league and was named the most efficient player on the Under Armor circuit.

Baker’s close friend and teammate at Combine, sophomore Robert Dillingham, was approached by Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, to begin the roster of Donda Academy’s new basketball team. About a month later, Donda’s administration reached out to offer Baker his own position. He recalled making the tough decision to leave, stating, “I was eighteen, moving across the country by myself. I knew it’d be hard being away from my mom, too. I’ve been close to her my whole life and we have a special relationship, but I felt it was the best thing for me.”

So, he moved west to Simi Valley, California to end his high school career with national coverage. After its initial roster announcement, the team went on to make national headlines for months with their Balenciaga-produced uniforms, Ye’s frequent appearances at away games, and the overall mystique surrounding the Academy.

According to some reports, Donda Academy was officially announced as open during September of 2022, but according to The Season Ticket, the Doves’ first game was a year earlier, on Nov. 6, 2021.

Donda Academy is a K-12 Christian private school, whose thesis statement is helping students “to be a reflection of God’s glory in the world.” The school was founded by Ye in memoriam of his late mother, Donda West, who was a Professor of English at Chicago State University. Its tuition is $15,000 per year, but scholarships are offered. Parents of Donda students have been encouraged to sign NDAs regarding the branches of teaching offered.

Describing the average day at Donda, Baker said, “We’d really just get up, not too early, not too late. Then, we’d all go do our classwork for a few hours. Once everybody had gotten a certain amount of work done, then we’d have practice. After practice, we’d either lift weights or do some stretching, and after all that, the rest of the day is yours. A lot of people just worked out more, some hung out with friends–really just normal high school stuff.”

The private school is unaccredited, meaning that it does not have the power to issue its own diplomas or class credits, but Baker said that this is made up for with an online-learning partnership. He received his diploma just a few weeks after graduation.

Towards the beginning of the season, Baker and his teammates resided mostly near Donda’s California campus in luxury apartments the players shared. However, as the season grew longer, they traveled for away games. The season lasted from Nov. 6, 2021, to Mar. 12, 2022 and ended with an 11-9 ratio for the Doves.

In October of 2022, following a string of antisemitic remarks from Ye’s Twitter account, Donda Academy announced an indefinite closure, only to be reopened a few hours later.

The fallout of Ye’s spiral left the Doves fractured from the inside. Robert Dillingham, the team’s only five-star recruit, transferred to play out his season for Overtime Elite, a pro-league for talented prospects. Players A.J. Johnson, Jacob Bannarbie, Javonte Taylor and Chuck Bailey Jr. also transferred out to other basketball programs across the nation.

Baker opted not to comment on the current state of Donda and the team.

The Academy remains open and is currently accepting applications for the 2023-2024 school year at a new, undisclosed location somewhere north of Los Angeles. A basketball roster has yet to be announced for the year.

Baker remains friends with many of his Donda teammates; he said, “We all close still. I still talk to all the people there–all the coaches, the academic advisors, all of them.”

He was offered a position as a Monarch defender just before the start of the season at Donda. He committed to ODU early to “have [his] senior year just to play.” Although he had received multiple other offers at that point, he’s since “forgot[ten] about them.”

“I liked the [ODU] coaches a lot. I felt really comfortable and it wasn’t too far from my mom. I just liked the overall vibe when I visited campus.”

Baker is currently a freshman in his second semester at ODU. Despite covering a bench position earlier into the season, he’s begun to play longer, accumulating a total of 188 minutes on the court since November. The season also showed that Baker is a force to be reckoned with, scoring a total of 45 points for ODU with a few more games left to increase that number.

One of his “main goals right now” is to play for the NBA, and he’s planning on staying in college “for however long it has to take to make that happen.” The last draft pick from Old Dominion was in 2012 with Kent Bazemore, making a total of 10 Monarchs who’ve gone pro since 1983.

Baker is a criminal justice major, and hopes to pursue a career in a related field after his retirement from basketball. He plans to stay in the North Carolina area following graduation to be close to his mother.

“I’m taking care of my mom and my people back home in North Carolina – and just playing basketball. I’m locked in right now.”

History Making Season for Jason Henderson & ODU Football

This article first appeared in the spring 2023 Mace & Crown magazine issue.

Finishing the season with a 3-9 (2-6 Sun Belt) record was not the outcome that ODU faithful wanted for the 2022-2023 ODU Football program. There was a lot of buzz throughout the 757 area because the Monarchs had their best home football schedule ever, with multiple in-state foes coming to Norfolk. The Monarchs welcomed the Virginia Tech Hokies to open the season and went on to win the contest 21-17, resulting in thousands of fans flooding the field. ODU met Liberty, James Madison, Georgia Southern, Marshall and Arkansas State at S.B. Ballard field, but the Monarchs finished 2-4 while 1-5 on the road.

Although the team’s performance fell short of expectations, there were still many highlights, such as linebacker Jason Henderson’s historic season. Henderson is a junior at ODU and is majoring in exercise science and physical education. He was a three-star recruit out of Delaware Valley High School who set a school record for 529 tackles in his four years at Delaware. He also tallied 80 carries for 762 yards for ten touchdowns as a senior and was ranked No. 24 in the state of Pennsylvania and No. 60 linebacker across the country. Jason was named Scranton Defensive Player of the Year twice, along with all-league, region and Class 6A all-state accolades. He was also named All-State linebacker for the state of Pennsylvania in all classifications.

Henderson’s individual performance on the field for the Monarchs defense has been pivotal to its success, but this past season, he took it further. He finished the season with 186 tackles–the most in college football. The No. 2 tackler in the nation, Cedric Gray of North Carolina, was behind Henderson by 49 tackles. Tallying 186 tackles is not something you see often and was the third most in FBS history. Lawrence Flugence’s (Texas Tech) 193 tackles in 2002 and Luke Kuechly’s (Boston College) 191 tackles in 2011 are the top two leaders in tackles. Henderson averaged 15.5 tackles per game this season which was also third most in FBS history behind Keuchly’s 15.9 (Boston College) per game in 2011 and Rick Sherrod’s (West Virginia) 15.6 tackles in 2001.

Henderson recorded double figures in tackles in 11 out of 12 games and is the only player in the country to have multiple 20+ tackle games this season. He led the team with 10 tackles for loss along with a sack and three pass breakups. Along with that, he broke the Monarchs’ single-season record for tackles in the eighth matchup of the season versus Georgia State. In the tenth game of the season, Henderson also broke the Sun Belt Conference record. His extraordinary performance throughout the season has warranted him many accolades.

In December, after the conclusion of the 2022 season, Henderson was named a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). Being selected for this honor earned ODU football its first FBS All-American. Henderson is the tenth player to earn All-American honors for Old Dominion. He joins the list with former FCS All-Americans punter Jonathan Plisco (three-time), long snapper Dustin Phillips, defensive tackle Ronnie Cameron, quarterback Taylor Heinicke, wide receiver Nick Mayers, long snapper Rick Lovato, defensive tackle Chris Burnette and linebacker Craig Wilkins.

Henderson has already had a storied career in the blue and silver, and he will be returning to Old Dominion for the upcoming 2023 football season. (Elena)

Henderson also earned his second All-American honor of the year after being named a third-team All-American by the Associated Press. That was not all; Henderson was named a second-team All-American by Phil Steele and Fox Sports as well. He was selected to four All-American teams.

Henderson has already had a storied career in the blue and silver, and he will be returning to Old Dominion for the upcoming 2023 football season. The Monarchs will be losing tight end Zack Kuntz and offensive lineman Nick Saldiveri as they prepare for the NFL Draft. In early February, both members were invited to the NFL scouting combine that takes place from Feb. 28 to Mar. 6 in Indianapolis. It was the first time that Old Dominion had two players invited to the combine since 2019 when Travis Fulgham and Oshane Ximines participated.

ODU football hopes to shake off last year’s disappointing season as they prepare for ACC powerhouse schools like Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in the first two games of the regular season. The Monarchs travel to Blacksburg on Sept. 2 to take on the Hokies before hosting their home opener at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Sept. 16 against the Demon Deacons. The Monarchs will also welcome Appalachian State, Coastal Carolina, the University of Louisiana, Georgia State and Texas A&M-Commerce.

FDA approves over-the-counter sales of Narcan

The Food Drug and Administration approved over-the-counter sales of Narcan on March 29, 2023. As Maine struggles with the opioid crisis, many people at the University of Maine know or have known someone affected by substance abuse issues.

Naloxone, otherwise known as Narcan, is a medication that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose when administered in time. Narcan comes in two forms: a nasal spray and an injectable. It is non-addictive and counteracts effects on the central nervous system and respiratory system that happen during an opioid overdose.

“If you suspect someone is overdosing you can administer Narcan. Narcan has no negative effect on someone if they are not actually overdosing. Sometimes someone may appear like they are overdosing, and they have another medical situation going on,” explained Jennifer Sinclair, a harm reduction specialist at Healthy Equity Alliance. “Again, Narcan is safe regardless of if it is something else. Always give Narcan if you suspect an overdose.”

In 2023 alone, there were 1,577 overdoses in Maine, and over 1 million Americans have died of overdoses in the last two decades.

“Due to the severe impact that generational substance use disorder has had on families over the past 100 years, the current population of local adolescents and young adults has had to deal with exponentially escalating effects of this opioid crisis in all realms of their lives: socially, emotionally, communally, personally, educationally — the list goes on,” Sinclair said. “There is no untouched community; unfortunately, there rarely are any families untouched by substance use, substance abuse, and the harmful outcomes of our current opioid crisis.”

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, fentanyl contributes significantly to fatal and nonfatal overdoses in the United States. Other drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine can be laced with powdered fentanyl to resemble opioids. Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin, and its difficulty to test without fentanyl strips make it difficult for people to know if their drug contains the substance.

“College students are often living independently for the first times in their lives and may be experimenting with novel substances, or using substances to cope with the stress or trauma in their lives. So it’s incredibly important that students understand risks and get information and resources about how to minimize harm/risk and respond appropriately in crisis situations,” said Rob Glover, associate professor of political science and honors at UMaine.

The approval will increase access to Narcan and contribute to reducing deaths related to opioid overdoses.

Another barrier to access for the life-saving drug is stigma. Stigma often prevents pharmacies across the United States from distributing Narcan openly to those who request it as they do not want to be associated with people who use illicit substances.

“Maine has the strongest ‘Good Samaritan’ protections in the country to protect individuals experiencing an overdose (or those seeking medical assistance) from criminal prosecution for minor, non-violent crimes. And we should all be working to fight back against stigma, creating spaces in which people feel empowered to be their whole selves, share their experiences with substance use, and seek help, support, and love when they need it,” Glover said.

Sinclair explained that harm reduction are techniques that aim to decrease harm, and anyone can participate in showing compassion for all members of one’s community.

“Students can help by using language that is conducive to changing the narrative around the opioid crisis. Another way is by gaining more understanding around the legislation that is coming up and supporting Harm Reduction and Naloxboxes and better access to Narcan,” Sinclair said.

Emergent BioSolutions, the producer of Narcan, has yet to announce the price for over-the-counter sales of the prescription.

The University of Maine System Injury Prevention and Substance Use Disorder Research Collaboratives is hosting three webinars to discuss rural healthcare, focusing on substance use disorders. The first talk will be hosted this Thursday, April 13, at 11 a.m.

Strain Review: Point Break, Dixie, Binske made spiritual Easter Sunday

When Americans think of Easter Sunday, around 65% of them are likely celebrating religiously in the marking of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. An unknown number of Americans, however, may have celebrated the day with a different form of religion: a plant-based one.

Personally, I was part of the population that spent the beautiful end of the weekend with my friends in the backyard playing beer pong and smoking joints in the sun. While most Easter Sundays for college students contain mimosas and bubbles, ours also offered half-gram pre-rolls and plastic eggs with edibles inside.

Point Break, indica flower grown by Organic Alternatives testing at 23.2% THC, was a very addictive strain to have on such a good day. I don’t use that word lightly, as my friends and I ended up smoking about eight half-gram joints throughout the day party.

As the day progressed, I happened to find myself back in front of a colorful basket filled with even more vibrant plastic eggs next to a sign that read, ‘Purple is 10 mg of indica, yellow is 10 mg of fast acting sativa, enjoy!’ After a pop of one Dixie Limon Squeeze sativa gummy and one Binske Strawberry Guava indica gummy, I was ready to enjoy the glorious weather with my favorite people.

“Its THC level was also enjoyable for my friends and myself, as it didn’t get the crowd too high or socially anxious but instead created a chance for all of us to sit in a circle and chat about who found the most Easter eggs.”

All three of these products can conveniently be found at Organic Alternatives. Point Break is $35 for 3.5 grams of bud, and Binske edibles are for $14, but Dixie gummies increase slightly to $23, both for a 10-pack of 10 milligram gummies.

The flower-to-edible ratio mixed just right with the addition of the occasional drink of beer or champagne. One thing I get nervous about with flower is it being too dry, which proceeds to me coughing up a lung. But whether that’s my lungs crying for help or not, Point Break bud was just moist enough to contribute to my palate rather than take away from it with a case of cottonmouth.

Its THC level was also enjoyable for my friends and myself, as it didn’t get the crowd too high or socially anxious but instead created a chance for all of us to sit in a circle and chat about who found the most Easter eggs. There’s nothing like smoking a joint with your closest friends in the sunshine as you cheer for your buddies at the pong table.

About an hour after my moment at the edible table, I was reminded of the two chewy gummies I had snatched. I could feel my body loosening up and my mind increasing in serotonin as my friend called for me next at the beer pong table.

I thought in my current state that these edibles had given me the power to absolutely obliterate our pong opponents. The mix of indica and sativa had formed a conscience of its own, like a pong sensei that helped guide my partner and I to a first-round win.

While the amount of cannabis I consumed may scare others away, any of these products would suit a great smoke session at your own levels of want. And while I hope your celebration of Easter was as enjoyable as my celebration to get infused was, checking out any of these products will only enhance your celebrating experience. Rating: 10/10.

UH softball comes up short against McNeese in extras

A late error cost the Cougars the win over McNeese in extra innings. | Oscar Herrera/The Cougar

The UH softball team dropped its game against McNeese State University 4-2 after going into extra innings at home Tuesday.

Graduate student Kenna Wilkey started on the mound for UH for what turned out to be a slow game at the start.

Both teams batted zeros until the top of the sixth inning, when McNeese’s Kaylee Lopez drove in the first run on bunt and later stole home to give McNeese a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore catcher Emma Robertson hit a pinch-hit solo home run and put the Cougars on the board in the bottom of the seventh.

Later, a single from senior outfielder Paige Hulsey assisted junior outfielder Amanda Carden in a second run from UH to tie up the game and eventually send it to extra innings.

The eighth inning went untouched, but at the top of the ninth, the Cowboys scores two run back-to-back, both unearned.

The Cougars could not overcome the deficit, dropping to 18-19 on the season

UH will travel to play their first conference game at Witchita State April 14-16.

Abelardo Morell Provides Exactly What is Promised in His New Exhibit

On March 4, 2023, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts opened an exhibit entitled “The Unique Perspective of Abelardo Morell,” which features 14 photographs highlighting nature, floral stills and, at times, himself. Morell’s methods are a beautiful meld between traditional subjects and modern techniques that redefine photography as an art form.

Layered Landscapes

Many of Morell’s pieces are layered landscapes that capture two sides of nature, one being the recognizable image of the location and the other often being the ground or a nearby road. In “Tent-Camera Image on Ground: View of Garnet Hill, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming,” Morell captures what appears to be a small group of burnt trees in the wintertime. However, he overlays it across an asphalt road, forcing the viewer to see a completely different side of the natural landscape. It provides an illusion that makes the picture of the trees look like an intricate pattern melted into snow on a road, but it also brings to mind the man-made roads carved through the previously unadulterated land.

The same can be found in “Tent-Camera Image on Ground: Grand Tetons and Snake River on Sidewalk.” The overlay of the sidewalk, beautiful mountain range and river makes it look like a framed photograph reflecting concrete in its glass covering. The X across the photo draws the eye into an unexpected focal point but ends up forcing the viewer to find their own path across the rest of the picture, as there isn’t a traditional compositional line that leads the eye around. The tiny stones in the concrete also give the piece a beautiful painterly look emblematic of Georges Seurat.

One of the pieces in which the overlaid ground and the background landscape meld the most is “Tent-Camera Image on Ground: The Colorado River Looking Northwest Moab, Utah.” There’s a beautiful harmony between the dry, wood chip-covered ground and the damp red rock beside a river that allows the viewer to see all three images: the actual river, the desert floor and the meshing of both.

Flowers Forcing Perspective

Four pieces from Morell’s “Flowers for Lisa” series are featured in the exhibit. They are all starkly different from any of the tent-camera pieces. “Flowers for Lisa #75” was not the piece that caught my attention initially, but as soon as I saw it my jaw dropped. It was the first photograph I saw that had a human subject in it, and the focal point was not a real flower, but rather a light painting that was drawn using a colored flashlight and prolonged exposure from the camera lens. It feels like a contrast between Morell’s art and traditional symbols of love: he’s giving a flower to Lisa, but it’s something of his own creation and therefore even more meaningful to him. The man (who we can assume to be Morell) is out of focus, forcing the viewer to see his creation standing strong in front of him while it simultaneously obscures him.

The other standout “Flowers for Lisa” piece is #36. The only two elements of the photograph are the shadow of a vase of flowers, overlapping over a white door that is blocking a bright light. The complete lack of nature depicted gives the feeling of loneliness and emptiness that stands out in the gallery of otherwise very busy photographs. Morell creates a beautiful contrast between geometric and organic shapes with the perfectly rectangular door and the floral shadow bursting from its perimeter.

Methods to Morell’s Madness

Morell’s photography techniques are nothing short of unique. In an interview with Musée Magazine in Issue 15: Place, Andrea Blanch dug into the way Morell creates his art. He was heavily inspired by camera obscuras and how much they affected people in the ’80s.

“I knew there was something really powerful about that phenomenon,” Morell said. “So in ’91, I thought, ‘Why not try to make a picture of that effect?’ … People have used pinhole cameras, but a photograph inside a room converted into a camera obscura and photographed, no one had done that before for some reason.”

He started out darkening a whole room with opaque plastic, then made a tiny hole in the plastic looking outdoors so a dim image of the outside would show onto the opposite wall. It required a long exposure to get enough light into the picture, sometimes as long as eight hours.

As his techniques have developed, he has found the way to capture his images exactly as he wants: the tent camera.

“The tent camera is sort of an outgrowth of the camera obscura technique,” Morell said. “I had a commission to do work in West Texas a couple of years ago and they were wondering if I could do camera obscura pictures in the desert, and I pointed out that there are no rooms in the desert, so no, I can’t do it. So I thought about making a portable room in the form of a tent. And I continued to make work in that way too.”

Morell’s methods are constantly developing and shifting with the times, but no matter how he uses his camera, his photographs continue to shift viewer’s perspectives on what photography can be as an art form.

One such celebration you can catch is the FoCo 4/20 Celebration hosted by The Joint Smoke Shop and Golden Goodness Food Truck LLC. Taking place outside of The Joint Smoke Shop down South College Avenue, this event will be going from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is open to the public.

Art, cannabis, food and community are core to this yearly event. Here you will be able to find local art, tasty food, friendly competitions and hourly giveaways. The Joint Smoke Shop will also be running several deals, including buy-one-get-one for $4.20 on most items all day.

“These events will bring together cannabis communities from all walks of life and create spaces for incredibly fun and positive experiences for those who chose to attend.”

With that said, 4/20 is a great day to shop for all things cannabis. Many dispensaries and smoke shops will be doing special deals on this day to celebrate the culture and to get their customers excited and equipped for this special holiday. Northern Colorado is home to many great things, including some amazing venues, so be sure to look for various concerts and performances that might be taking place near you.

As it is every year, Denver will be a hotspot for 4/20 events both big and small. If you want to participate in one of Colorado’s biggest 4/20 celebrations, then check out the Mile High 420 Festival taking place at the Civic Center Park in downtown Denver.

Hosted by JARS Cannabis, this festival is free to enter to anyone 21 and older with reservations. The Mile High 420 Festival draws in cannabis advocates from around the world and creates a lively environment for all types of cannabis fans to congregate, communicate and cultivate new relationships and experiences.

Because Colorado was one of the first states to legalize cannabis, the Mile High 420 festival aims to honor and expand on the state’s history with cannabis culture. This year the festival continues to combat the stigma while celebrating the successes of the cannabis industry. Expect to see all the essentials like food, games, music and more.

If you’re busy on 4/20, there are other options for you to celebrate like Baked’N Denver 2023 on April 22 in Aurora, Colorado. Tickets to this event cost $20 for general admission and will grant you access to vendors and performances during the festival’s hours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. During this time, the Baked’N festival will feature vendors, a health and wellness area, a live comedy show and other live performances.

Another event this year that embodies the spirit of 420 also takes place on April 22. The infamous Red Rocks Amphitheater will be hosting Wiz Khalifa and Joey Bada$$ along with a few other performers for 420 on the Rocks. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with plenty of time to prepare, as the music won’t start until 6:45 p.m. Before you arrive, know that tickets start out at $38.

These events will bring together cannabis communities from all walks of life and create spaces for incredibly fun and positive experiences for those who choose to attend.

For those of you who feel like celebrating in a more low-key or private way, don’t forget that Colorado is rich with cannabis culture, which can be found in many different shops, venues, restaurants, dispensaries and even outside on streets and sidewalks. That’s why I’ll encourage all of my fellow introverts to go out on April 20 and engage with your community, even if it’s just to grab snacks from the gas station down the street.
