‘When Walter is doing play-by-play on Monday Night Football, I can say I knew him’

What others are saying...

C.A. Tuggle, adviser for Carolina Week, professor at University of North Carolina

The thing that makes Walter stand out is his drive and work ethic. He's focused, but not to the point of having blinders on. His versatility is also impressive. He's won awards for features, hard news and sports. He anchors TV sports and radio news. He's very well-rounded and willing to put in the time and effort to make his pieces very, very good.

Earlier this year, he had the opportunity to do play-by-play of a Carolina basketball game on ESPNU.  At the end of the game, on air, the color commentator told him... "hey, in 5 years when you're looking for a partner, don't forget about me."

Adam Rhew, political reporter for WCHL, news anchor for Carolina Week

Walter is one of the most talented, driven people I know. He works harder than anyone else in this business. In fact, there are some weeks where he reports more than he sleeps. He's that guy you know you can always count on.

If I am to be successful in the industry, I will owe much of my success to Walter. I think the one moment that resonates with me is his work with ESPNU as the third anchor for a basketball game between UNC and UNC-Asheville. The excitement I saw in his face made it clear that it was the realization of a dream, a beginning to new opportunities.

It was his high energy that fueled the show. Even working with accomplished veterans like Fran Fraschilla, it was Walter's voice that stood out. After National Player of the Year Tyler Hansbrough dunked on 7-foot-7 Kenny George, Walter, very excitedly and with great passion, yells out, "That's why they call him Psycho T!" You could hear the energy and excitement through his words, and it's that energy that leads me to believe that one day when Walter is doing play-by-play on Monday Night Football, I can say I knew him back when, and was lucky enough to learn from him.
