When the staff had nobody else to run the paper, he stepped up as an unlikely and inspiring leader

What others are saying...

Natalie Jarvey, news assignment editor for the Daily Trojan

The Daily Trojan went through some editorial board changes this fall. We lost our two news editors in the same week, leaving these spots open and the rest of the staff scrambling to find content and fill pages for about two weeks. Ryan stepped up and took on the job of news editor. Although he came onto the editorial board about a month after all of our other editors, he quickly assimilated. As the news assignments editor, I can say that I don't know what I would have done without him. He immediately committed himself to the position. Most days when I would come into our office, he would already be there working. He also stayed late many nights when other editors would go home early. The morale in the office was much livelier when he was news editor.

When it came time for us to elect our new editor-in-chief, Ryan -- because he will be a senior next year -- was one of the people who were able to run. While he didn't initially intend to run for editor-in-chief, he embraced the opportunity and really took it to heart. He has a great vision for the paper and many ideas to see the Daily Trojan improve and grow over the next year. He won the election and will be coming back next fall as our editor. This semester really shows how someone can go from a writer to editor-in-chief in one semester through his dedication to the paper and commitment to serving our student body.

Laura Keller, editor-in-chief for The Daily Trojan

Ryan brings a sense of passion unmatched by most journalists I have worked with at our paper, and as an editor, helps develop this in others. He patiently expounds ethics, writing and reporting techniques and sourcing strategies to each of his many writers, never allowing them to feel the weight of the daily responsibility he bears in balancing the oversight of their progress and in managing story content and layout in his section. His drive for producing a weighty section is only arguably surpassed by his own desire to learn more about journalism -- its history and plausible future -- and ways in which to improve it.
